FJIREFLY was just too innovative for its time. So was DOLL HOUSE. Not surprisingly, both series were directed by Josh Whedon. But he struck gold with BUFFY, VAMPIRE SLAYER. And, of course, with THE AVENGERS.
Well, I frequently watch reruns of the original "Maverick" series starring James Garner and Jack Kelly (and Roger Moore and Robert Colbert [1 or 2 episodes and the latter is a star--seriously?]) on Encore's western channel, and which, for my money, was the best and most entertaining "adult" TV western of them all.
Others include several Steven Bochco series: "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law," and "NYPD Blue." The latter's Andy Sipowicz is easily among any network television series' most complex characters ever.
Then there was the too short-lived USA Network's "Fairly Legal," because Sarah Shahi is delectable, and Virginia Williams is far from eyestrain, too. (Not to mention that the storylines were entertaining, as well.)

I never watched FIREFLY until catching up with it after it was off the air.
I miss DEAD LIKE ME on Showtime and IN PLAIN SIGHT on USA, to name two that come immediately to mind.
Jeff M.
George mentions BUFFY, I really liked the first couple of seasons of that. Going far back, I loved HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL.
I also miss Buffy. Giles was a kickass librarian!

Oh, Maverick was my all-time favorite. All of these are excellent choices although I never saw FAIRLY LEGAL.
