Las Vegas: Question One:

Natalie Wood reading.

There is so much to say about Vegas and about the conference I attended but let me start with this.

Overheard in Vegas.

A passenger on the hotel shuttle bus was chatting with the driver and told her he'd supported himself for the last two years by placing bets for several Vegas gamblers (the driver and passenger knew each other).
This guy was given a comp room by the hotel and made several bets a week for which he was paid $150 or so each. He told her he expected to go back to the strip later that night to place just such a bet.
Now what does this mean? Why couldn't these gamblers place their own bets? Why did he have to go back to the strip to place it? Why at a specific time? Why don't I know any of these things? Help me out-- oh wise ones.

The ways of Vegas are still mysterious to me but it sounds like he's a professional.

The gamblers he's fronting for may be on one of those casino lists of people who aren't allowed in the casino. Suspected cheats, card counters, or maybe just someone who wins too often. Casinos may have all the odds in their favor, but they still think it's their God-given right to ban anyone who might get any kind of an edge.

It kinda sounds more like bets at the sports book. Gambling on sports is illegal in most states, so he could be handling bets for people who can't place one themselves.

I was thinking it might have something to do with March Madness-maybe a night game.

I am a gambling virgin. Well maybe I've been flirted with a few times but....

I did put a quarter in as we waited to board our plane and won $15. Bets did I cash it in or let it ride?

Aside from the casinos' own discretion, I have the faint notion that some sorts of convicted felon are legally barred from using the services of certain kinds of gambling establishment. If that isn't wrong, I don't know how often it would be enforced (perhaps more now than in decades past).

Race tracks are frequented by guys 7 gals called ten "percenters", for ten percent they'll cash in your winning ticket & the tax forms will be filled out in their name.
It could be a tax thing.

Here's what happened. I put in dollar and I didn't even realize I now had won 60 more games. I just kept pulling for several more times before my husband came by and pointed it out to me. So I just kept going and in traditional LV fashion left it all behind.

Patti, if you only lost a quarter, you came out way ahead of most people! There used to be a gas station on the way out of town that offered motorists "free aspirin and tender sympathy".
