Did you know there would be no America without Ray Charles?
Flip Wilson used to do a bit about Columbus talking to Queen Isabella about discovering Isabella. “If I don’t discover America, ain’t gonna be no land of the free and home of the brave. (He mentions a couple of other clichés, then) and no Ray Charles.”
The Queen panicked. “Ray Charles? Ray in America, honey?”
Chris said, “Damn right. Where you think all them records comes from?”
And yet, whenever people make jokes about African American country music performers, they manage to forget how important Charles was to country, and country to Charles.

Yeah, Ray Charles was universally cool.
Oops. I meant about discovering America.
I don't think there has ever been a greater performer/musician than Ray Charles. He's my "desert island pick", for sure. Thanks for posting, Patti!
