OKAY, I SAID THAT WAS MY LAST POLITICAL POST

(Disclaimer: I am a Democrat and Obama supporter)

but I have to mention this. What happened to truth in advertising? This may be happening from PACs on both sides, but in Macomb County here, right down the road, a group of people is being stealthily targeted with ads suggesting that Obama has disreputable friends, like Kwame Kilpatrick and Reverend Johnson. The ads are all racially oriented and run in white areas.
Obama and Kilpatrick have never been friends and indeed don't get along. They have some footage of Kilpatrick introducting Obama to the Detroit Economic Club that they use. And Obama distanced himself from Reverend Johnson long ago. Is anyone really responsible for the things their clergyman says?
Reagan Democrats were not able to hand the state over to Bush in the last two elections but will the race card make Michigan go Red? Unions are working hard for Obama but is it enough. Are their similar ads in other swing states?

I live in deep-red Texas so our results are rarely in doubt. To be honest, the Dem. primary here in March was the most excitement we've see around here in my lifetime as a voter (i.e., since 1988). The general election 'fun' ads y'all see up there never reach us down here.

Here's a question: every night, almost without fail, during the NBC Nightly News, there's a McCain ad. I never see one by Obama. I wonder why?

Patti,

Like you, I'm a Democrat and an Obama supporter. I haven't seen those ads here in Arizona, McCain country, but lots of Obama ads.

And, I think there are a lot more Obama supporters in this state than people think. It will probably end up in McCain's camp, but McCain has never done anything for this state. People here say he's never been our Senator. He's always been running for President.

Lousy Senator. Give me a people's Senator like Ted Kennedy any day.

I wonder how he's doing? Greatest senator ever.

So many crimespot people in Texas, aren't there?
I think they even can gear the commercials on the nighttime news to local markets, Scott. No point in running Obama in Texas although why McCain either in that case.

Instead of complaining, you could be talking about Obama's good points. For example, he actually does have executive experience. From 1995 to 1999, he led an education foundation called the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and remained on the board until 2001.

Although it may not appear like this, I really am not running this blog to garner votes for Obama. What I am interested in is the way conduct during this election is diminishing us. We have lost any notion of telling the truth.

Scott,

I live in deep blue NY and see the same McCain ad on the NBC Nightly News but never an Obama. It must run nationwide.

Patti,

I was going to email you the article about this that was in today's NY times, but I guess you saw it.

Politics is not the cleanest of businesses. Never was. Never will be.

As a voter who is slightly to the left of most of the people I know, I will say that the more conservative of any two candidates seems generally to wage the dirtier campaign. I am not sure why that is. Do conservatives believe so strongly in their ideology that they must have victory at any cost.

I have to say that Gerald Ford, although more conservative than Jimmy Carter ran an honorable campaign. Oh, that's right, he lost.

And, Patti, this is a writer's blog. There are two things writers do--they write and they think. The results of both appear in your blog.

Newspapers here in Canada have ads from the Democrats urging Americans living here to register and vote.

I've never seen any from the Republicans.

I wonder if the Republicans think that expats would more likely vote Democrat. I wonder if there are stats to back that up. I bet they target army bases though.
Terrie-thinking is starting to give me a stomach ache though. How about you?

I am in Ohio. I watch very little TV so I really don't know about the ads. I know that we get calls all the time-- mostly from the McCain campaign. I would much rather the candidates talk about t-h-e-i-r positions and plans rather than slinging insults at each other. Sarah Palin concerns me greatly. In my opinion, there is very little substance there, and what there is scares me. A heartbeat away from the Presidency would be too close.

Patti,

No stomach aches here, instead thinking gives me major headaches.

Debra,

I agree with you on the lack of substance in what little we see of Governor Palin. It is embarrassing that she never speaks and when she speaks she does not instill confidence.

Well, you must be glad that McCain has suspended his campaign to rush back to Washington to singlehandedly save the world. Maybe someone should remind him that he's only one of a hundred and he isn't even on the Senate Banking Committee. What the hell can he do besides vote?

If he pulls these kind of grandstanding stunts as President, he may be worse than Bush.
