Kevin at 6 1/2
Kevinisms
Nana-did you know ladies more than fifty years old can't birth babies?
Can you check my back? When it itches, I get scared I am turning into something else.
I don't believe in ghosts, witches or goblins. But I think there are leprechauns because I saw one's hat once.
Maybe there is a Santa Claus, but I don't think reindeer can fly.
If a genie gave me three wishes, I would wish I could breathe fire like a dragon, I would wish I could eat bad food all the time, and I would wish I was invisible.

Just Kevin
Has jumped into loving a book thanks to DIARY OF A WIMPY KID. So many kids, boys especially I think, love humor in a book. And this series has him drawing cartoons too.
Kevin, Nana-can I ask you a question? (He always prefaces a question with that).
Nana, "Sure."
K. "Have you ever seen the tooth fairy? (Kevin is missing four teeth right now)
N. "No, I haven't Kevin. She's too fast for me."
K. "Well if you do, see if she looks a lot like my Mommy or my Daddy."
How quickly it all ends.
What was the first book you remember really turning you on to reading?

Kevinisms on turning five

"People always say eagle eyes. But they could also say someone has peregrine falcon eyes."
"Did Andy Warthog paint that? It looks like a painting by him."
"I probably won't take the training wheels off my new bike until I am seven or eight."
"Daddy says now that I am learning to twirl in my skating class, I have to switch to hockey ."

Kevinisms 4 11/12
We are on the way to the Robot Garage, a place for kids to experiment with legos. "Kevin, would you like to try see how our new GPS system works."
"Yes." I hand it back to him and he hears the woman's voice tell us to turn. "Who's that lady in there?"
"She's not real. It's a satellite up in space that sees where our car is and where we want to go?"
"Way up there, huh?"
"Yep. (and I am grasping here--really I have no idea of how it works but the robot garage percolates in my head.) "It's kind of like a robot in space." I am pleased with this inaccurate but apropos of the day analogy.
He pushes something accidentally, and the GPS goes dead. "Uh, oh."
I quickly pick up my trusty mapquest map and begin reading directions to Phil.
Kevin-"I guess you're the robot now, Nana."

"My Daddy says we should keep our pumpkins on the porch until Thanksgiving because that's a pumpkin holiday too. But look, he has to get rid of them by Christmas because...cause that's enough pumpkin stuff."
********************
Kevin "I'm having pizza and a Buzz Lightyear Cake for my birthday party--the one with kids."
Me "What about your family party?"
Sigh. "My Mom will have to figure that one out. I can't do everything."

(Trips to Target figure heavily into Kevin's agenda)
Kevin "You know that popcorn holder you got me at Target. I lost it. Can we get another one?"
Me "I guess we can. But we can't buy a toy this time. Your birthday's coming up and we're going to Robot Garage."
Kevin. "Oh. Maybe that popcorn holder is in my toy box. I better look first."
*************************
At the Robot Garage, the employees are putting together a storage shelf disturbing his view of the lego kits
Kevin "Don't they know there are people here trying to buy toys?"

"Nana, you don't look like yourself today."
"What's different about me?"
"I think you're starting to look like Poppop"
(Oh great, I think.) "How do I look like Poppop?'
"Mostly at your feet."
"Nana, what did your son play with when he was four?'
"My son? You mean your Daddy."
"No, back when he was your son and not my Daddy. What did he play with then?"
"I don't know if you realize this, but I really do think I am an animal sometimes. I worry about it and I wish someone would check to see if I got animal batteries by mistake?
"Is there anything more beautiful than a cheetah. I know lots of people like leopards or tigers but a cheetah makes you want to pet him."

Come Talk About the Best Movies with me at Crimespree Cinema
It's right here. What films should have/have not won?
Kevin story of the day. We are discussing herbivores v. carnivores. Going through fish, animals, dinosaurs. He is getting most (or some) of them right. He's only three after all. He likes them to be herbivores, of course.
"Fish are our friends not our food." (sacred text of Finding Nemo)
Then he brings up sheep, so I say, "what do you think sheep eat, Kevin?"
With very little pause. "I think sheep eat samwiches."

THE THINGS YOU DO FOR LOVE
Last night, we wadded through the rain in Greenfield Village (recreation of historical homes village--I bet you
have one in your area). It might have been lovely on a dry night with lighted pumpkins along the way, people dressed up like scarecrows and headless horseman, pumpkin, nursery rhyme characters, a few stations handing out candy (although not nearly enough for the price).
We adults griped the whole way about what a shame it was that it was raining, that we couldn't see very well, that it was all outdoors on such a night. Our almost 3 year old didn't say much, just walked along in his Elvis costume (picked for its glittery guitar).
At the end of the 75 minute trek, as we headed for the gate, relieved to be almost in the car, he said, "Can we do it again?"
What was a chore for us was heaven for him. If only we had known it from the beginning? Sorry, Kev. We'll do better at the Zoo Boo in two weeks, rain or shine.

A Little Kevin break
A few funny things from my funny guy.
If you ask Kevin, just turned two, what he wants for Christmas, he says a car wash. We have finally traced this desire to a Thomas, the Train catalog---but did he read it? The picture is not very illuminating and is very tiny. Only the print is big.
I know he thinks this will be big water toy, too.
His trip to Sea World last week can be summed up in one oft-repeated sentence: "I touched the sting ray." Then he flops on the floor and swims across the rug.
If anyone mentions that someone is funny, Kevin will say, "Nana is a funny guy." This makes me think I have to stay up nights thinking of how to keep my reputation as a funny guy going.
Thanks to Chris for the book recommendation, IT'S OKAY TO BE DIFFERENT, which I have waiting under the tree. (Still have to track down the Car Wash though).
Is there anything nicer than a grandchild. (Right Terrie?)
