FFB: POISON, Ed McBain

POISON (1987) by Ed McBain – Tipping My Fedora
?

I read this in 1988 along with many other 87th Precinct stories. I liked the way different cops were highlight along with Steve Carella. In this one, many of the men involved in the femme fatale's past are being poisoned. One of the detectives falls for her.

I have to admit, Patii, I haven't read all of the Ed McBain novels, but he did write some fine ones. Thanks for the reminder.

I remember binging on Ed McBain's procedurals during the 1970s a dozen at a time. He was a prolific writer who kept the. quality of his work high.

I'd have to refresh my memory for the specific title, but I read all the 87th Precinct books, first catching up on the old ones, then reading each new one as it came out.

Like Jeff, I have read all the 87th Precinct books -- the most memorable of which (to me) was GHOSTS, which entered into scary supernatural territory with just a couple of "throwaway" pages. McBain (Evan Hunter) managed to publish 55 books in the series without repeating himself; the books were always fresh and interesting. I'll have to refamiliarize myself with POISON, but I believe I remember which one it was. Over the years, I've managed to read the complete McBain/Hunter/Marsden/Collins/Abbott/Taine/ Cannon/Adams oeuvre, with the singular exception of many of the "Dean Hudson" books which he denied writing.

Why a question mark, Patti?

Jerry, I still have a handful of them yet to read. I've read, as I'm sure you have, the early time travel/SF stuff like FIND THE FEATHERED SERPENT and DANGER: DINOSAUR!

The worst of those I've read was the awful Matthew Hope book MARY, MARY, where he breaks one of the canonical no-nos passed down since Van Dine (SPOILER ALERT!), the introduction of a previously unmentioned identical twin as the insane murderer (END SPOILER).

As a long-time Christie devotee, I guessed the murderer in one of the 87th Precinct books in Chapter 1 (it might have been LONG TIME NO SEE).

And lastly, there was the late non series book - I wish I could remember which it was - where one of the main characters goes on and on about the most important day of his life, the day JFK was shot. He has several scenes thinking about where he was and how much it affected him, but Every. Damn. Time. he refers to it as having happened on November 21 rather than November 22! Where was the editor?

I removed a question but not its mark. How are you feeling, Todd?

Thanks for asking, Well, tomorrow (23 Sep, almost today) is the post-surgical check-in, as well as a session with my endocrinologist...and I guess it's not a surprise that in late September it's time to tap the steam heat system for its various tune-ups, but it would be nice if I could already safely carry a good-sized water pail (all told, steam heat seems not quite worth the trouble, despite of the love those who usually don't maintain it themselves lavish on it). I do hope to lose the tube draining my own midsection tomorrow.

Another step toward normal--a nurse-practitioner pulled out my drainage tube this aft. This is not a recommended experience, but is an improvement on having said tube still in.
