Ten New Authors I Tried in 2024

TracyK listed ten new writers to her on her blog this week. I went though my list and here are ten new writers I read. There were several non-fiction books but for the sake of reflecting what the majority of my reading is like, here are ten novels from 2024. I starred my favorites.

LIFE IMPOSSIBLE (this was for one of my book groups and I didn't much like it nor did the majority of the group. Although many liked his earlier work, MIDNIGHT LIBRARY

SALVATION OF A SAINT, Keigo Higashina* earlier review

BRIAN, Jeremy Cooper * a man constructs a life around attending movies

SHRED SISTERS, Betsy Lerner writes about how an autistic sister makes family life revolve around her.

THE BIRDWATCHER, William Shaw,* a cop becomes embroiled in the death of his neighbor

YELLOWFACE, R. Khang, a white woman steals a manuscript from her Asian friend-not sure of my final opinion on this one

GOD OF THE WOODS, Liz Moore* very strong mystery set at a summer camp

JAMES, Percival Everett, * best novel of the year. Retelling of Huck Finn from POV of Jim

THERE, THERE, Tommy Orange *, 12 natives headed toward a Pow Wow. Explosive ending

REAL AMERICANS, Rachel Khong, three generations of an Asian family in America

Any new fiction writers for you?

In the last several weeks, Clarice Lispector and Vivian Fumiko Chin (who seemed very amused anyone was reading her work), and in yesterday's SSW, Marcelle Dubé...probably a few more if I look back farther, not counting the essayists and varying sorts of journalist whose newsletters I've been taking in the continuing crises...

Only seven with novels or collections that I can think of offhand, although I'm sure I've read shorter pieces by many of these writers: Kendall Foster Crossen, J. Allen Dunn, Chris Grabenstein, MacKinley Kantor, "Larry Maddox" (Jack Owen Jardine), Frank Owen, and Yrsa Sigurdardottir. Crossen, Dunn, Kantor, and Owen are old pulpsters, and Jardine's heyday was in the Sixties.

Oh, yeah. Unfortunately, I don't have that notebook with me down here. I do have last year's book, so I could figure out authors from that, but it will take a while. Liz Moore I read this year, otherwise she would have made the list.

Cara Hunter, I read the 6 books (I think) in her DI Adam Fawley series plus the one stand alone.

Kate Quinn, The Briar Club. Set in an all-women's boardinghouse in D.C. in the early 1950s.

Dwight Garner, The Upstairs Delicatessen. Garner is the NYT main book reviewer. Probably my favorite non-fiction book of the year, about books and eating.

Tommy Tomlinson, The Elephant in the Room. More non-fiction, learned about it from Garner's book.

Elizabeth Strout, Olive Kitteredge and several others.

Amy Pease, Northwoods.

Peter Tremayne, Whispers of the Dead plus a second collection. Sister Fidelma stories, set in 7th C. Ireland.

Edmund Morris, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

Great variety here. I read the Garner one too. Really like Sigurdardottir. Is Grabenstein writing adult books again? Liz Moore was especially good. Have always meant to try Lispector.
