Short Story Wednesday: "Stunts" Ace Atkins from THE BEST MYSTERY STORIES OF THE YEAR, 2024

Ace Atkins uses two characters from his Quinn Colson novels in this delightful if sad story.

Jason Colson is a stuntman for actors like Burt Reynolds and he is being feted at the end of his career in this tale of a meet and greet for movie fans. It's the details and the characters that make his story work so well. It makes you want to hunt down Colson's appearance (and also his daughter's) in the series.

This sounds like a good read, Patti. And it makes me want to read some Ace Atkins (which I haven't yet done).

He is an excellent writer although his themes do not always appeal to me.

I look forward to reading the Atkins story, Patty.

Mine's up now. Another science fiction story from a 1955 issue of FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION, surprisingly relevant in today's political atmosphere.

I never read those Atkins books. They always seem too long.

I'm reading HEMLOCK AT VESPERS, the first collection of Sister Fidelma stories by Peter Tremayne. These are really good. They're set in 7th Century Ireland. I'm not generally a fan of Medieval settings, but Fidelma is a great character, a lawyer (and sister of a King), with the legal power to compel people to talk to her as she solves murder cases and other crimes. George recommended this a while ago, and I already read a second collection of these stories, though I haven't read any of the 35 or so novels about the character.

I have two books from Atkin's Nick Travers series but have not yet read them. When I looked him up today on Google, I saw that he was born in Troy, Alabama, where my grandmother was born and raised, and where my mother spent some of her childhood.

I do have a copy of the THE BEST MYSTERY STORIES OF THE YEAR, 2024, on the Kindle, so I can check out this short story.

Atkins was a star football player for Alabama. He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Those were the books I read too. He is a friend of Megan from her year at Old Miss where he lives.
I will look for those books, Jeff. Sounds like fun read.

I think Ace Adkins is an underrated writer. And so is Peter Tremayne who writes the wonderful Sister Fidelma series that Jeff Meyerson and I enjoy.

Very interesting about Atkins playing at Alabama. I stopped following Alabama football when I moved to California and did not care much about it before that, but in the south you can't miss. I grew up with the Alabama vs Auburn rivalry because my uncle went to Auburn. I do miss the beautiful trees and scenery in the south and I bet it is beautiful at Old Miss.
