Watching CALL THE MIDWIVES for the first tine, it took me a few minute to remember Jenny Agutter, who plays a nun, in her youth. She is incandescent in the series and so she was forty years ago.
- A 1971 BBC TV film version of "The Snow Goose" directed by Patrick Garland, from a screenplay by Gallico, featured Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter. It won a Golden Globe for Best Movie made for TV and was nominated for both a BAFTA and an Emmy, with Jenny Agutter winning for Outstanding Supporting Actress,[3] and was shown in the US as part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame.
It was, of course, on HALLMARK that I saw it. When you look at the list of movies or series they put out in the past, it is remarkable. Nowadays they seem to rely on romances.
THE SNOW GOOSE was a story, based on a folk tale, written by Paul Gallico and published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1940. It won the O'Henry Award that year.

I don't think I have ever seen WALKABOUT. But she steals every scene she is in in CALL THE MIDWIVES. I haven't wanted to be a nun since I was seven (not even Catholic) but she makes me yearn to put on a habit and wash stone steps.
WALKABOUT trailer nearly scared me to death. That Australia is a scary place.
It was a great movie. We saw it the first year we were married, I believe. I agree, between this and WAKE IN FRIGHT (OUTBACK) it doesn't make the Outback look very appealing.
Jenny Agutter was also in Series 2 of a very good (if often anti-American) British TV series, SPOOKS (MI-5 in this country). If you haven't seen it, Phil would really like it, I bet.

You're right about HALLMARK specializing in love stories now. But when THE SNOW GOOSE was produced, HALLMARK had a reputation for "QUALITY" movies.
I remember this, it was very, very good. That was when it was "Hallmark Hall of Fame", before The Hallmark Channel, I believe.
Had a HUGE crush on Jenny Agutter as a kid - loved her in THE RAILWAY CHILDREN of course.
Loved the book but don't know if I ever saw the film.
One or two of the characters in the British show COUPLING were always in a deeply lusty love for Agutter.
Saw some COUPLING but don't remember that. She inspires feeling.
I finally found this dvd its great
