What was the most recent piece of music you bought?

I removed word verification. Let's see how that works.

Mine was the soundtrack from the dance movie Pina, but I know most people don't buy entire CDs anymore. I downloaded music on my MP3 when I got it, and four years later the same tunes are on there and I never play it. The energy involved in downloading a whole new repertoire seems too great. So I still buy CDs. And friends burn me ones they think I will like. (Thanks, Kathy).

Now that you can usually listen to samples from all the songs on a CD on Amazon, I don't buy as many duds as I used to.

Anyway, what was the last piece of music you bought?

Patti - Gosh, I haven't bought music just lately - not in CD form. Hmmm...I guess my last purchase was the soundtrack from Rent, but that was a bit ago...

A band named Travis and third studio album, The Invisible Band.

As a certified dyed-in-the-wool geezer I do not download music, ever. So what did I buy?

Well, not home to check but as far as I can remember we got a 2 CD set (mostly greatest hits, a few live) by Bob Seger after seeing him in concert at Madison Square Garden.

Mahler Symphonies 2 & 5, New York Philharmonic, Bruno Walter. Walter was Mahler's assistant, and Bill Vacchiano, who plays first trumpet on both recordings, was my trumpet teacher's trumpet teacher.

I wasn't much of a musician professionally, but I do like the idea of playing Six Degrees of Separation and getting to Mahler in four.

I tend to buy in bunches. Last purchases were cds by Mogwai, Black Keys,Sigur Ros, Winterland-a live box set from Jimi Hendrix and the new Leonard Cohen(his best in years). My next must own will be the new Springsteen in 2 weeks.

Just heard Mahler's Fifth on Saturday night along with a Mozart piano piece with Emanuel Ax. Quite nice. They gave a lecture on Mahler beforehand. Quite interesting although I have never quite got his music. Need to play it more.
This is when I hear some new names.
Jeff-I have seen your home and you have no lawn.

A 2-CD collection of Bach's VIOLIN SONATAS by Frank Peter Zimmermann on SONY. I, too, sample music on AMAZON or some of the other music web sites before I buy. As you say, Patti, there are fewer mistakes that way.

pattinase (abbott) said...

I am getting covetous of some of these choices.

True, Patti. And we like it that way. I'll leave the whole lawn thing to Phil.

I know we bought a few other things recently, like Haugh Laurie's New Orleans CD, Let Them Talk, and probably a couple of soundtrack/original Broadway cast CDs.

I get everything through the library. My wife buys singles off iTunes.

Thanks to Cranmer for mentioning Travis. I had forgotten all about that band. I often listen to BBC 6 Music - I love that station - and first heard a Travis tune on there: http://youtu.be/G1f2M5G9KG8

Everyone in my family has an i-pod and downloads music except me, so any newly-purchased CDs are certainly mine--and I haven't really bought much recently. The last purchase I remember was The Turtles's Greatest Hits and I spent an enjoyable afternoon listening to "Happy Together," "Eleanore," and "You Showed Me" over and over again.

I just heard a piece on NPR about Roberta Flack's new CD of Beatle covers which sounded like a worthwhile investment, so that might be my next purchase.

pattinase (abbott) said...

I use my library too Gerard. Although burning CDs on my computer is a 50/50 prop.
I haven't thought of THE TURTLES in years.
I am hoping they will buy some of these.

I don't buy CDs anymore, or hardly ever, anyway. I buy from iTunes (always full albums, never single songs) and if it is something I really like I buy vinyl. Most of the vinyl I buy also comes with the CD or a download option, which is perfect.

So, last thing I bought was Opus Eponymous by Ghost. Before that was the soundtrack to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

I've never listened to Leonard Cohen, but I'm thinking of picking that up.

Chris said...

Oh, and speaking of the Turtles, there is this site somewhere where you can see what song was #1 the day you were born; mine was "Happy Together" by The Turtles.

pattinase (abbott) said...

And now you reminded me I want that soundtrack right away. I may or may not tell you what my song was.

An entertaining video done several years ago by Flo and Eddie on the history of The Turtles: http://youtu.be/5JHN5HaUg28

While looking for that clip I just learned they played with Zappa in the early '70s.

They also claim to have had some part in the genesis of Steely Dan. Not sure that Donald & Walter agree with that though.

I downloaded some old blues recently; before that, was gifted the Rolling Stones' Some Girls deluxe CD -- which is way good in a ribald and a-PC kind of way.

Downloaded: 21 by Adele

Bought CD: Orchestral Works, Johan Halvorsen Vol. 1-3 (one volume per CD) Each includes one symphony plus miscellaneous short works.

I download from both iTunes and Amazon, but In most cases I like having the CD and jewel case instead of just an mp3 file.

I really HATE the new security word system. I rarely get the second one right and have to try over, sometimes four or five times! Grrrrrrrr! I know it's not just you, it's Blogger, but that's just another reason to dislike Blogger.

I guess I should have correctly called it a capthca, not a word verification, but you certainly know what I mean!

I'm making a lot less comments since this new system. Not worth the hassl.

Soundtrack album from BOARDWALK EMPIRE, Season 1.

Re word verf: Those of you who use Blogger may have noticed a decline in the number of comments you receive. I'm sure it is not because your posts aren't as scintillating as always, but the word verfs are so difficult to read, it often takes three or four times to get it right and sometimes it's easier to just give up than keep trying.

pattinase (abbott) said...

I am going to try and email blogger but they are very unresponsive. I have tried to put comments on many blogs and been unsuccessful myself lately. If I had someone to switch me over to word press, I would move. But I hate to lose six years worth of posts and comments.

I bought the two Billy Jack Wills Western Swing, 1952-1954 KFBK years and Ralph Stanley Old-Time Pickin' clawhammer banjo collection. Love all three!

Deb, I'd say we have very similar taste. We've seen The Turtles (aka Flo & Eddie) in concert more than once. "Happy Together" was our song when we started going out in 1967.

Thanks for making me feel ancient, Chris.

When I was born #1 was ...wait for me to get off the geezer bus... "Buttons and Bows" by Dinah SHore.

I am a proud buyer of CDs!

Recent purchases:
"DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK" by D-A-D
THE STRANGER 30th anniversary set by Billy Joel. This has a live concert CD as well as a DVD of television appearances.

Fun reading these -
Mine is That Old Lucky Sun, Frankie Laine
Michel, Geezerette-At-Large

Patti, I know that one. My parents had an album of million selling songs from the 1940's and '50's and the Vaughan Monroe was on it, though I always thought the title was "Dance Ballerina Dance."

I don't buy music that much, and never download any. The last CD I recall getting was LOVE by the Beatles.

When I think of Billy Vaughn, it's "Red Sails in the Sunset" that comes to mind. My folks had an album with it, maybe titled that.

Wow, it's ... gone. You must have just changed the setting. I hope you can keep it this was and don't get a bunch of spam! Thanks!

last download I bought (rare thing, mostly just get downloads with Amazon promo credit): David Amram, "Tompkins Square Park Consciousness Expander" (for my office computer, since I have hidden my cd on myself)

last album, gift: the deluxe BORN THIS WAY for Alice, who is a confirmed Lady Gaga "little monster"

last album for myself: catching up on the Blondie catalog, NO EXIT

Note to Deb--"You Showed Me," of course, a song the Byrds wrote and recorded, though the Turtles had the hit...and I dig the cover by Salt n Pepa, the rap act, of the song enormously...

Note to Patti--the Underappreciated Music last month featured someone highlighting the Turtles and F&E...

I remember when it seemed like Blondie or Deborah Harry was the ultimate rock star. She was one the cover of the NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE. So gorgeous and different.
And overnight it was gone and she was appearing in campy movies. I adored her.

Todd Mason said...

She never went away too far...Blondie the band have reformed and recorded three albums since THE HUNTRESS, the last album of their first run, spaced over the last thirty years...and no shortage of solo projects over those decades.
