My Life at the Theater: You Can't Take it With You

This is from the movie but I saw the play at the Shaw Festival at Niagara on the Lake in 1999 and enjoyed it immensely. I have seen it at other places too. I couldn't find a play clip that did it justice so this is from the wonderful movie with Jean Arthur and Jimmy Stewart.

Anything with Jean Arthur is fine with me. I especially like Too Many Husbands where Fred McMurray is seemingly lost at sea. She then agrees to marry his best friend Melvyn Douglas. McMurray of course returns. All three were great but she was the greatest. This was based on a Somerset Maugham play and the sly ending would be considered decadent even today. I've always wondered how they got past the terrible Breen (Catholic Man of The Year of course-was there ever a man who received this who deserved it?) office. Carol and I love this film and have watched it four or five times in the last two years. And you're right. I feel in love with her voice (seriously) when I was twelve or thirteen and saw her old films on early tv. She was my imaginary girl friend for at least a year.

I heard somewhere that admiration of Jean Arthur was a requirement if you wanted to be friends with Groucho Marx. He would ask people "What do you think of Jean Arthur?" If you answered wrong he was done with you.

As for "You Can't Take It With You"... I'd say 95% of the people involved with theater in any capacity have done that show and enjoyed the experience.

It's a perennial.

I think I have seen it three times actually. But I could not find a credible clip to use--thus the movie.
