Say Something Good About Detroit: The Whole Foods Market and Murals

This might not seem so wonderful to you but WHOLE FOODS is the first upscale or even middle-scale food stores to put a store in Detroit in decades. It is taking is mission seriously by enriching the lives of passersby as well as customers.

Local artists created the murals that deck all four outside walls. About 100 artists submitted proposals for what they would do and it came down to these four. Each winner received $1000 for supplies and a payment of $7500. The artists did their work on individual frames that were all linked seamlessly on the corners.

The artists are Jerome Ferretti, Katherine Larson, Tylonn Sawyer and Matthew Sharum, all local painters.

The store is located across the street from the Detroit Medical Center and near the Detroit Symphony buildings in midtown Detroit. The store is set to open this week.

I've had my problems with Whole Foods in the past (like when the CEO called Obama a fascist) and, even at a place like Whole Foods, reading the labels carefully is a must. That being said, any attempt to bring healthy, nutritious choices to any area (especially an area under served by major grocery chains) should be applauded.

Sorry--before I bring the wrath if the trolls down on Patti (which was never my intention), my husband reminds me that the CEO of Whole Foods called the Affordable Health Care Act fascist, not the President himself. Apologies. Carry on. Nothing to see here.

I admit that they have not been beacons of progressive politics indeed. But to take a chance on Detroit is admirable.

Nice store.

We don't shop at Whole Foods as a rule but I like to walk through it occasionally and see just how overpriced it is.

They do have nice stuff.

We don't shop there either for several reasons. But I really like first rate produce because we eat so much and none of our local stores have it.

They are supposed to open one in Brooklyn at some point. There is one in Manhattan in Union Square we've been to, as well as others in Columbus Circle and on Seventh Avenue in Chelsea, but mostly the ones we go to are in Florida.

I used to go to Whole foods regularly. We don't have one close to us now, though.

The closest one to us is in Metairie/New Orleans, so I only drop by when I'm south of the lake. However, right by where my husband works in Mandeville, we have a Fresh Market, which has good quality produce and meat (along with the prices). Our local market is Rouses--they have wonderful seafood and produce, plus a large selection of organic, natural, and ethnic cuisine products; but I can only afford them for specialty items. The bulk of my shopping is done at Walmart/Sam's Club.

Sounds tempting, Patti.

;)

Deb, we've been to a couple of Rouses in New Orleans, one in the French Quarter. Nice stores.
