What Are You Missing Out On?

At this time of year, I wished I loved football. I blame it partially on living in Detroit when there has been very little to cheer about for the last half century. But it must be fun to be interested in the games, to swell with pride at great plays or anger at bad ones for these months. I think I have it in me to like football but you really need to have a team to learn the game with.

What do you wish you enjoyed more? What widely held interest eludes you?

A game of chess. It eludes me now because there is no one to play with. I can play online but it's not the same thing as sitting opposite someone and seeing the look on his or her face when you checkmate. By the way chess is a great stress buster.

Plenty of my friends and most of my students are addicted to FACEBOOK and TWITTER and cell phones. I have zero interest in all three.

I have long wished to play a musical instrument well enough to peform with other musicians. Watching a string quartet makes my heart ache for that.

I'm totally out of the loop when it comes to TV series, even the ones like Mad Men and Breaking Bad that have received so much critical acclaim. I don't know if I've gotten busier or lazier as I've aged, but the last series I made a concerted effort to watch was "Frasier" and I dropped that after about three years.

I am adding a new one. Segways. Those things that you ride around like a motorized scooter. I don't know why they allow them on city streets and they are quite common in SD. I believe the man who invented them died riding his.

I can only think of two things I'm missing out on that I regret: musical talent and wealth.

Things that have passed me by that I do not regret are those endless multi-volume door-stopper fantasy series and internet porn.

I agree with George on those things. Also, fashion, shopping (except for books and music), sports drinks, hockey, soccer. I wish I had learned to ski and play golf when I was a teen, now it's way too late.

Are sports drinks things like Gatorade?

I am often the recipient of Internet porn after researching some topic. Just don't get it but I am sure few women do.

I've missed the boat on television. It is such a huge part of life for so many people, yet I can barely abide it. Even shows that folks rave about, I try and watch . . . and just don't get it. I get movies and stuff, but TV leaves me utterly cold.

Ultimate mysteries for me: Sports fan mania (dressing up in team outfits, painting faces, etc.), video games, compulsive texting, golf, everything that is labeled reality TV.

Charlie Brown. It seems I'm the only one who finds it utterly dull.

I'm also not much of a party animal. Boy, I sound old... :-)

Yes, reality TV. And parties. Charlie I am iffy on because I relate to his despair.

You "receive" porn, Patti? Via email? Or you get porny results in your searches? More and more women are finding their own porn, but most of it tends to be aimed at men, still, it's true. Oddly, I am rarely the recipient of porn.

Football, like boxing, is a game of hurting yourself and other people. [Redacted] that.

My fellow Canadians think it's more than odd that I have little interest in professional hockey. Maybe they are right when I co-write a sports column primarily devoted to amateur sport and play hockey twice a week. I know I'm not missing out by not being a fan of it or football. What I am missing out on is the ability to truly "hear" and appreciate a variety of music genres and to understand most literary fiction.

Patti - I must say I'm with you about football. I understand it intellectually but I just don't get it.

Coffee. I don't hate it but I don't drink it. Also have little to no interest in basketball, hockey, modern TV series, being a car guy, jewelry, and most music made after 1972.

Following up, I'm not that wild about sitting through a Shakespeare play.

So-called "social media" like Facebook and Twitter are on my list too. You can't turn on the local news, at least in New York, without hearing the "anchors" (so much more accurate in Britain, where they call them what they are, "news readers") blathering on about "tweeting us your pictures" of whatever - the snow, your cat, etc. - or "following us on Facebook."

It's not just boring to me, it is actively annoying.

NASCAR is another snooze for me, as are all other auto races. To me a car has always been basic transportation. Even as a teenager I never cared about engine size or whatever. So no, don't ask me what's wrong when your car won't run because that's what a mechanic is for.

I'm with the Cap'n on music for the most part, though there are a few songs and artists post 1970's I do like.
