SOUTHLAND

Joelie, Vanessa, Natasha reading.

I am going out on a limb here, but I watched last week's pilot episode of SOUTHLAND last night and thought it a was a pretty strong show. The second episode is tonight. It reminds me a little of THE WIRE, not promising they can sustain it, of course.
At least, it probably won't be formulaic like so many of the crime shows on right now.
It concerns the LA police force, with the expected emphasis on gangs.

Agree. Southland is remarkably gritty for a network show. I like the mixture of uniform and detective stories. I've been wondering if something would fill the void left by the end of The Shield and The Wire and have high hopes for Southland.

Me too. And I don't think they will fall into the formulaic problem because of the format. They did a really good job of separating the stories and characters because sometimes on THE WIRE, I would get lost and have to rewind.

I liked it, too. Looking forward to the 2nd show.

I got the distinct impression it had been influenced by ’The Wire’ (there was no music score that I can recall for example, until The National’s ’Fake Empire’ played across the end montage.) and really liked the general feel of it, which apparently owes something to Joe Wambagh.

It’s also a very short run, like seven episodes short.. So I have high hopes that it will maintain this level of quality. It’s also got a terrific cast.

I've missed it so far, but generally have liked the producer John Wells's work, on the likes of THIRD WATCH.

I almost will watch with trepidation that it will be as good as the first one.

I liked the pilot as well. Another I thought pretty good was The Unusuals set in New York City, Did You catch that one?

No, and I like that actress and the premise so I hope to catch up with it.

That photo of Vanessa Redgrave (young & beautiful) with her two daughters is achingly poignant, now that Miranda is gone.

Isn't it incredible. They were (are) so gorgeous.

I don't watch The Wire or The Shield, so I tend to think of Southland as the ER of cop shows, since it's in ER's old slot, and has a similar format, in that there were always several medical crises going on during each show. FWIW ER was probably the most realistic and grittiest hospital drama on network TV, unlike the soapiness of Grey's Anatomy and the quirkiness of House. I liked Ben MacKenzie on The O.C.'s first season and I think he's even better here. I have high hopes for the show, too. The Unusuals has a similar format in that there is more than one case going on, but all the main characters are detectives. Southland's second show had a touching story about an abandoned baby.
