Nelson Mandella reading.
the Susan Boyle story, I mean. So with a little hunting, I was able to find a story from last year when an ordinary-looking forty- something mobile phone salesman named Paul Potts, was a similar sensation with an opera rendition in England. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA
Not that both of them aren't sensational, but still....It's gotta be scripted.

Patti, to me, the Paul Potts event looked unscripted. Didn't see the Susan Boyle thing (is that that YouTube person?). The Potts thing was wonderful. My wife loved him and bought his CD. I don't watch American Idol but you could tell Simon was ready to laugh the guy off the stage after he said he's going to sing opera. The audience understood and the judges did, too. Didn't Potts win the whole thing?
I think the problem is that as society we stereotype people we expect ugly or physically odd people not to have any skills or talent, of course a lot of them do and in a big way. I agree its a lot like Paul Potts, and I expect every year there will be someone in a similar position!!!
She has a lovely voice which has been enhanced by the application of rags to riches phenomenon!!
Scripted or not both of them had fabulous talent eh? If it is a ratings set up, then I suppose that's TV for ya.
I'd imagine the first one was real, the second scripted. I'll have to check on who won.
Yes, it worked. And I don't guess any of these shows are truly unscripted.
I suppose in the end demonstrating that regular people are talented is not such a bad thing.
I'd already posted on Susan Boyle before I saw your post. One wonders how the public will accept an "average" person, even with extraordinary talent. Remember Jim Nabors's voice. He could only make it as a comedian.
I would rather watch a plain Susan Boyle than a glamourous entertainer. The Simon Cowlings of the world seek out frumpy people to turn into stars providing they have hidden talent. That's how they make their money. Whether or not Susan Boyle wins BGT she will have some kind of recording contract.
I'm not in the habit of watching any kind of reality show let alone TV, but saw a blog post on her. Ms Boyle's singing is refreshing to hear.
As for Paul Potts, he's another rags to riches story, and very deserving of his climb to fame and wealth.
These types of stories help all kinds of people, Patti, even writers, to be inspired that they too can be winners in this stylized ego-world.
