This is such a gorgeously written story, it makes me want to read everything Barry has written.
Six elderly men are on the Harleys taking the ashes of a friend to the place he wanted to be scattered. Barry gives us great detail about the day, the road, the lunch they have, their ailments, their brief encounter with surfers at the spot. When one man suggests selling his bike, no one wants to hear it. Loved it.

This does sound like a great story, Patti. Just from your description I can imagine it all. There's something about those years of experience that bind that group...
Thanks, Margot.
Never heard of him, but on your word I downloaded one of his short story collections.
I've been reading COUNTRY CHRISTIE, a collection whose title is self- explanatory. I've read all the stories in the past and they seem nothing more than "all right" today. But when you can't concentrate because your head is in a fog, that's OK.
Ah, the new issue: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2026/10/19/chuck-murphys-last-run-fiction-kevin-barry
Flu? I've just been informed that my post-surgery recovery could easily take 8 weeks or more. Fun Refuses to Stop. MRI tomorrow, along with podiatry visit. (Organ recital!)
