Duane and Meredith Swiercynski's fifteen year old daughter, Evie, has a form of leukemia and has been in the hospital for many weeks. The medical costs are astronomical. Various ways of helping them are at work in the crime fiction community. If you want to contribute, even a small amount, go to the link. I dare you to look at the photo and not chip in a few bucks. Heart-breaking. Perhaps you have read some of Duane's books or comic books?
As someone with someone with cancer, I can't tell you what a strain it is. And I can't imagine having it be a child and not having medicare to pay the bills.

Astronomical is right. I'm not pals with Swizzerstikinskyles but know from a few of his online posts that she has been in the hospital for a few months now. The daily stress must be intense and never mind trying not to think about the hospital bill's rising tally in the back of your mind.

As we both know, cancer is a fucking evil that just SHOULD NOT BE!! Someday soon, despite the Trumpinistas and the democracy-destroying Mitch McConnells and the Ayn Rand-teat-sucking Paul Ryans, we will have a universal health care/single payer system in the United States -- something that will free up money from businesses that can be used for better wages, expanded research and development, and job growth (although corporate greed may stymie some of these benefits).

My heart goes out to Evie, her family, and all those touched and affected by her situation. Consider me on #TEAMEVIE in spirit today. Once the house sells, I'll be able to join #TEAMEVIE in reality.

What can possibility be more important than spending money on healthcare. No one can avoid needing it.

It is devestating. I too have been sharing the news. I can't imagine the hell they are going through.

Evie died last night. So horrendous.

Crap. Is this for sure? Confirmed?

Yes. The worst has happened.

Yes it has. I was being absurdly hopeful this was a false call until I saw Duane's Twitter post. My older son is only 6 months older than Evie.
