A Playlist to Go Along with Hummingbirds

Josh (SIL) created a playlist to go along with his novel, HUMMINGBIRDS, right here.

I was unfamiliar with this site before now. The site is called LARGE-HEARTED BOY. I am also unfamiliar with almost all of the music. His idea of creating an eighties playlist would have been a different thing because I had kids listening to music 24-7 then.

Twelve groups, twelve albums, twelve songs. Never heard of one damn one of them, group, album or song. I DO listen to current music, buy some, mostly indy bands. I didn't realize I was so eFfin' out of touch. **sigh** oh well. I guess it doesn't matter.

Well, Rick, you've almost certainly heard Leonard Cohen before, even if his name hasn't stuck...aside from being active as a poet and songwriter since the mid-'60s, his "Hallelujah" is the most overused song in recent soundtracking. Judy Collins helped him get his recording start back in the first full blush of her career.

Most of the rest are relatively recent indyish folks, indeed.

Of the songs on that list, I'm only familiar with "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Leonard Cohen. Jennifer Warnes did a version which I liked more than Cohen's. (I think the name of her album from the mid-1980s was "Famous Blue Raincoat.")

Incidently, the New York Times' book blog ("Paper Cuts") runs a feature every Wednesday called "Living with Music" where writers provide a playlist that is somehow related to a work they've written or that they enjoy listening to while they're writing. It's worth checking out--although some writers seem determined to choose the most obscure music possible (well, obscure to an oldies-radio fan like myself).
