Five Days

Five Days was a pretty impressive HBO series that started last Monday. If you have HBO, try the second episode this week.
Other new TV shows, I've stuck with through two episodes are Chuck and Dirty, Sexy Money. Pushing Daisies was charming but it might turn too treacly quickly.
On the movie front, we very much liked Eastern Promises despite a few plot "huhs." The Jane Austen Book Club was pretty good too. (Look, guys, we only get a movie like this twice a year). Yes it was improbable that all the men would turn out to like Jane too and return to their wives, but you never know. Didn't much care for Manufactured Landscapes, a doc. about what industrialization, urbanization and globalization is doing to China. I got the point in fifteen minutes.

Rather suddenly, we have HBO at my housemate's house, and I'm sorry I missed the first episode of FIVE DAYS. If you liked JA BOOK CLUB, delay less than I have in reading Karen Joy Fowler's novel...she's really good. It and EASTERN PROMISES are among the several new films I've been meaning to see.

The fleshy new cable shows, TELL ME YOU LOVE ME on HBO and CALIFORNICATION on Showtime, not too shabby in first viewings, if a bit shallow. CALI has the edge, given its more comedic tone.

I think they're luring us in because suddenly we have Showtime and I got to watch a Dexter. I tried TMYLM but the sex scenes were to clinical, reminded me of the porn station when we lived in Amsterdam ten years ago. I need a little romance to carry me through it.
