I would never have expected to like a show about football and especially high school football in Texas but the writing was so sublime, the characters so well-developed, the acting so terrific I was won over immeidately.
Well, sports drama and fiction, when well-done, reaches those like myself with only the most casual interest in sports....Pivot, the cable channel, reruns this series, and I catch episodes from time to time there.
I first watched this because you raved about it and then bought the first series - and then the complete series - on DVD. I've been a fan of Kyle Chandler's since HOMEFRONT and he and Connie Britton were a wonderful couple.
As for sports-related shows on television, I miss SPORTS NIGHT.
Loved this show, and if you knew how little patience I have for football, you know it had to be good. It was very poorly served by being pushed all over the place in the schedule, though, and I think I may have missed a whole season because of that.
Yes, I think I was watching even before I had cable, let alone Netflix.
My sister lives down in the Pacific Palisades and one of her friends there ran into Kyle Chandler after Friday Night Lights was over at the local Starbucks or some such place. The friend was a big fan and so had the temerity to ask him what he was doing out here. Kyle said, "Looking for work."
I guess an actor between jobs is just an actor between jobs, even when they're stars.
And speaking of COACH - I agree it was awful - we met Craig T. Nelson at a Renaissance Hotel in New Orleans before they renewed PARENTHOOD for the last time. He wasn't too complimentary about NBC.

On my cable array, FXX is next to Pivot...FXX reruns SPORTS NIGHT in the early morning just before Pivot runs FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Pivot runs a fair amount of documentaries...it was created by merging a youth-oriented channel with the Documentary Channel US...and grabs a few films and reruns them a lot..WINTER'S BONE being one of them...along with the series it runs (BUFFY, VERONICA MARS, et al.).

I only saw a few episodes of this but like it quite a bit. Some day I'll have to watch the whole series.
I continue to forget PIVOT. There was something on there I was going to watch.

SPORTS NIGHT was great. So which sports' show do they bring back-COACH. COACH was pretty awful.
