Actors Who Never Get Their Due

Sam Rockwell  has been in perhaps two dozen or more movies but escaped much notice. I especially liked his performance in MOON, MATCHSTICK MEN, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, SNOW ANGELS and CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND. But I think he is known by very few.  He is rock solid in every movie.

Who else falls into this category?

It's funny you picked Rockwell. He's the first guy I would have picked.

I don't see her around much lately, but Bonnie Bedelia also comes to mind.

I'd go with David Paymer. He never misses. He's a pleasure to watch the way people like Jack Weston were. If the movie's bad they redeem it, if it's good they enrich it. In State and Main (he almost steals it from Alec Baldwin) and Quiz Show (has a corporate assassin ever been more chilling?) Paymer is a master.

Bonnie is on Parenthood. Paymer, I haven't
seen in a while.

Just saw David Paymer last week as a lawyer on PERCEPTION. You think at first he's incompetent but he is playing a long game. He has a recurring role as a judge on THE GOOD WIFE.

I'm thinking of Josh Brolin, Kiefer Sutherland, Tim Roth, and Jeff Daniels. And whatever happened to Laurence Fishburne?

Patti - Thanks for calling attention to Rockwell. You're right that he doesn't get his due...

I've always been a fan of Paul Giamatt.

Michael Rappaport is one. I don't even know what he looks like when he's himself. And one of my favorite character actors, Stephen Tobolowsky.

Well, I can't remember seeing him in anything so I guess I'm one of those who overlooks him.

Rockwell has made over 60 movies, Patti. He should be a leading male but I think he'll always be a supporting player. You ought to check out A BOX OF MOONLIGHT. It's the movie where I first noticed him and thought, "This guy is going to be big very soon."

I'll pick Michael Shannon. He should be a big star too, but I don't think it'll ever happen. Nevertheless he is the most fascinating actor working today. Subtlety and power in one person. Hard to find these days.

I love Michael Shannon. TAKE SHELTER is my favorite.
Tobolsky turns up regularly.
