I enjoyed my eleven days in CA. The weather could have been warmer but it also could have been colder like almost anywhere else. I think I am done with CA though after ten trips there. I go to Sarasota in three weeks. Both plane rides were smooth and on time.
Our condo was right on the water and we saw some fabulous sunsets. Lots of great meals: Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, Thai, Fish. I watched both playoff games for the first time ever.
Read THE POSTMAN's FIANCE after THE LONELY POSTMAN (Denis Theriault) which was okay.
Started THE DROPS OF GOLD on Apple. This is the second season. The final THE NIGHT MANAGER is on February 1, I think. I watched the first episode of the second season of HI-JACK, which takes place on a train instead of a plane. Been revisiting CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Started SHRINKING.
What about you? Are you keeping warm?

Welcome back .
Blogger still hates me.
OK, it posted.
The Tampa area had snow flurries yesterday, believe it or not. We were around freezing 🥶 yesterday morning, the high was 46. They said it was the coldest day in 15 years. Today is cold but not as bad. I'm sure by the time you get to Florida it will have warmed up to normal.
We watched The Night Manager again before watching series two, which we've started. Also watching The Beast In Me. Has Claire Danes ever looked worse? It's watchable but solo.
I think we're enjoying Riot Women (Britbox) more than anything else at the moment.
Jackie watched all 9 series of Suits.
Western NY is finally into the 20 degree zone after nine days of Arctic weather.
Patrick is in Greece. Katie leaves for San Diego on Wednesday. Diane and I are hunkered down with over a foot of snow on the ground. With the below freezing temps, the snow isn't going anywhere.
I'll be watching THE SEVEN DIALS MYSTERY on Netflix this week. I read the 1929 book last week--one of Christie's weakest.
Diane is making plans for Mothers' Day in NYC. Her sister may accompany her. Or me. Diane has 76000 Marriott points to use soon or they'll expire. That's why she's booking her room now. Stay safe!
So glad we caught up while you were here! And yes, the sunsets here can be spectacular. It's good to hear you got back safely, too. I hope you have a great trip to Sarasota.
Blogger hates me, too, Jeff. My early morning post vanished into the internet without a trace.
Briefly:
- It's cold here. Not New England cold, but cold. I regret leaving my long underwear back in Massachusetts many years ago.
- Spent the week in a deep funk over what is happening in our country.
- Amy's dog turned six yesterday and Erin turned 24 today. Birthdays -- whether animal or human -- are a good cause to celebrate.
- Finally finished streaming THE BARON, John Creasey's British TV series from the mid-Sixties with a number of interesting (and then little-known) guest stars; could not believe Jeremy Brett was ever that young.
- Not much reading done. A nifty horror novella from T. Kingfisher, and -- for comfort reading -- a Buffy the Vampire Slayer novel by Christopher Golden; Also, two graphic novels, one worthwhile, one not.
Hope your switch in climate after California is not too jarring, Patti. Stay safe.
Weather in Southern Wisconsin is warmed in the 20s.
We don't hear much news from Boy #1 in Minneapolis. The roving Goon Squads up there have me concerned. Idiots are in charge and no one is held accountable for their behavior.
Ran errands on Saturday and Boy #2 tagged along. Ate at a West African restaurant if head over to Madison again. Website is fancier than the restaurant but I enjoyed the food. https://lesdelicesdeawa.com/
Been watching FEAR THE WALKING DEAD and RESIDENT ALIEN.
Read THE BORROWED HILLS by Steve Preston. The novel seems to have a good bit of symbolism and I'm not going to try and translate it.
Started reading second book in the SOUTHERN READ series by Jeff VanderMeer. Enoyable with great narration by Bronson Pinchot. VanderMeer really seems to split readers down the middle with a love/hate for his stories.
Welcome home! Sorry about leaving the freezer open over most of the continent. Blogger hats me, too, but only when I try to post on Jerry's blog.
I caught up on the ANIMAL CONTROL episodes I missed in the previous season, but will have to hook up the cable (mislaid the new receiver when Verizon called back in the old DVR boxes late last year) to see AC or DOC before they can be watched post-season on HBO and Netflix, since Fox is not allowing streaming access to their broadcast signals unless one joins Fox One, their streaming service (or try my luck with these antenna things we used to use). Hard to imagine Fox being cheap money-grubbing SOBs (koff), but I can be cheap and patient. I do wait the next day to see CNN's HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU (US) on HBO, since CNN has a similar chintziness.
Bitterly cold and constant lake-effect snow here. Margot, great to see a familiar face. So funny we were both at the library ten minutes early. George, your kids travel more than anyone I know. Where is THE BARON STREAMING? I saw most of THE SUITS the first time it was on.
THE BARON is on Britbox. one of the remaining streaming channels I bother to get. 30 episodes.
Thanks, Jerry.
Earlier this morning I was sitting down to write some comments to post here, and then we made a spur of the moment decision to go get Glen's blood test done, so we just got home a short while ago. Now it is 6:00ish where you are so I will keep this briefer.
It is not cold here, although it seems so inside our house. The coat I wore to go out was far too warm for the outside temperature in the sun.
This week we watched a Perry Mason Movie (with Patti Duke), a Columbo (with Jack Cassidy and Mickey Spillane), and Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe (another TV movie). I am surprised how much I am enjoying the Perry Mason Movies. Also watching our normal shows, Murder She Wrote (in Season 11), Mentalist, and Elementary.
Glen is currently reading MAILMAN: MY WILD RIDE DELIVERING MAIL IN APPALACHIA AND FINALLY FINDING HOME, a memoir by Stephen Starring Grant. He is enjoying the book; the writing is good. I hope I can fit it into my reading sometime soon. I like the setting.
I just finished reading Anthony Bidulka's GOING TO BEAUTIFUL. It was the 2023 winner of the Crime Writers of Canada Award for Best Crime Novel. It is a mystery and a page turner, but it felt more like a novel about a man working through his grief after his husband dies to me. It is set mostly in Saskatchewan, and it was a lovely read.
Always mean to read more Canadian lit. Will look for this one.
Todd always seems to find shows I have not heard of.
I tried watching ANIMAL CONTROL on whatever streaming service now offers it. The show was not clicking for me. I may try it again.
I don't catch Brian Busby's blog too often but his stories about Canadian Lit are usually interesting to me.
THE BARON TV series had one of my favorite theme songs of its period...liked it as a kid, still do. Jaunty jazz-pop.
Nope! I was conflating it with another British import of similar vintage. THE BARON theme is OK, but hardly jazz-inflected. Now to figure out which jazz-pop theme I was thinking of.
