Working in Detroit

I work at a university where I sometimes advise students. Today a new graduate student, fresh from Pakistan, asked me if I thought it was safe for him to walk to the Welcome Center (a ten minute walk on a college campus). Pakistan! Isn't the place where Obama wants to sent the military to hunt down terrorists? Where would you feel more safe? Detroit or Pakistan?

There was a story on NPR about a year ago on video stringers in Los Angeles. They do the freelance nightly news gathering that the networks don't have the bandwidth to get.

During the story they interviewed one guy who was getting out of the business to go work for Halliburton in Iraq because it was safer.

Well, would you feel safer in Grosse Pointe or Lincoln Park? Not every part of Pakistan is the unpatrolled border with Afghanistan...

The thing that's kind of amazing is that he had just arrived in Detroit so his concerns must have been based on things he'd heard about Detroit back home.
