Someone having a special birthday asked that anyone who wanted to give her/him a gift at a birthday party, give her their favorite book. Not one they thought she would like, but the one they liked the best--the one that meant the most to them. What book would you choose?
My choice would be Stewart O'Nan's LAST NIGHT AT THE LOBSTER.

Tough choice, but I'd go with the Everyman's Library volume: The Best of Wodehouse: An Anthology.
It's still, probably, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
Patti, I'm with George on Wodehouse and anything humourous like "Present Laughter: An Anthology of Modern Comic Fiction" edited by Malcolm Bradbury and the satirical books of Richard Armour (I haven't seen his books in years). "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach is a personal favourite.
Probably Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice--those adolescent favorites die hard.
That's a fascinating idea. What an intimate way to get to know your friends!
Everyone is picking classics and well known books. What about the REALLY personal books? That would be my route.
I'd pick an intensely personal book -- one that no one would ever pick up on their own, let alone ever heard of. Something like The Man Who Fell in Love with the Moon by Tom Spandauer or Sarah Canary by Karen Joy Fowler. These are two books that have stayed with me since I first read them.
I agree with John. I'd pick FUP by Jim Dodge.
