Games

The condo we are staying it is filled with seventies-eighties era games. Do people play games like this anymore or is it mostly on electronics? Kevin has a Star Wars version of TROUBLE but it's a pretty minimal update.

What was your favorite board game? I remember playing Yahtzee on a vacation once until I could never again tolerate the sound of those dice in a cup.

My family had a great many game players when I was growing up. I can remember interminable MONOPOLY games that went on for days. RISK was a favorite of mine.

Risk was my favorite board game. But I haven't played any board games in ages.

I agree with George - Monopoly and Risk were favorites. We don't play them any more.

Monopoly and Risk. Remember playing Risk a lot in college. Haven't played a board game since my kids were young.

I wonder if any of the electronic games have the capacity for family play like these did. I remember playing BATTLESHIP and I have seen the electronic version of that but that was always a two=player game. Loved TRIVIAL PURSUIT for many years.

Patti, we used to play Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly, and Pictionary. I used to like playing Ludo too.

Ludo is new to me.

We play a lot of board games, but mostly newer ones like Agricola.

On the increasingly rare occasions that my sibs and I gather in one place, we do play board games and cards also. We are cutthroat Monopoly and Clue players. With the very young children, we play Sorry! and Uno.

Most family games end up with screaming, accusations, pouting, complaining, and players being barred from the room.

Maybe it just feels that way. New Year's Eve had at least one game that did not end badly.

My youngest child likes to play LIFE and I hate that game. It takes forever.

Patti, in India, the board game had Ludo on one side and Snakes & Ladders on the other, both played with dices. Ludo has four sides, each comprising four different colours and players have to race their four circular coins to the centre of the board. As with many board games, one can eat the others. There is immunity too.

I used to have Yatzee on my laptop--and I always turned the sound off. I couldn't believe that the annoying sound of the dice rattling was moved to the cyber world!

We always played lots of board games as our girls were growing up. Now it's mostly Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble. Many years ago, I was visiting a friend in Lubbock and an unexpected snow storm blew in--there were about six of us stuck in the house for two days. We played endless games of Uno and Skip-Bo. Although it was fun at the time, I can't play either if those now.

What's worse is when one player starts making up new rules as you go along. The person claims that since it is his game he can change the rules at any point.

People (OK, Jackie) refused to play Trivial Pursuit with me any more because I always won. My brain is full of useless information. She preferred Scrabble. With my family (also cut throat players) we played stuff like Uno and Upwards.

There's always room for Scrabble, but my favorite is Boulderdash.

Also don't know UPWARDS.

It's Risk for me, Patti. But then you know how we Canadians are so intent on world domination.

pattinase (abbott) said...

I worry about that every night, Brian, as close as you are to Michigan.
I am not a good game player; neither lucky nor diligent. In general I just want to get it over with.

I played a lot of cards (casino royale and blackjack and "Stab Your Neighbor" and never poker) and Yahtzee (and its color-coded rival Kismet) and a fair amount of dominoes with my family back when, and even ten years ago on occasion. My favorite now-obscure board game was Camelot (which Parker Brothers kept in print for some forty years), which incorporated a bit of chess, a fair amount of checkers and a slightly larger bit of "Chinese checkers"...I certainly have played a fair amount of backgammon, Othello, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and the major Parker Bros. and Milton Bradley games in my life (Life is, after all, Monopoly pitched a bit simpler). I am a terrible chess player, and have tended to win most other board games I've played. Multiplayer electronic games, such as Scrabble variant Words with Friends, have seemed to take up a lot of the previous space the board games did, but people do seem to still do the likes of Jenga (physically building something) and to some extent Pictionary and charades (which require performance)...leaving aside the elaborate console games.

Remarkable how Hasbro now seems to own every "surviving" game and toy of the past half century, now.

My favorite these days is Cribbage.

When I was a kid we played a lot of Monopoly and Clue. When Trivial Pursuit came out I played it as much as I could, though worthy rivals were hard to find. There was also one called Go To the Head of the Class that was fun when I was about 10.
I no longer have the patience to play long games these days, like Scrabble, Monopoly, or Life. Never liked Risk, except for the box art.

A rare one that I played in the early seventies was The Dealer McDope Dealing Game, where you went around the board buying and selling dope. That was fun, but you could learn to hate your opponents easily, who could narc you out at any time.

We were sad to find no cribbage.

If you dislike the sound of dice in a cup, I suppose you don't play Backgammon, which we enjoy.

Age is the factor here. As a young one, Chutes and Ladders was played a lot, along with Checkers and Dominoes and Parcheesi. Later Monopoly was my favorite, but it was hard to find others to play with in a two adult, two child family, and it's o good with two or one person!

Now, we play chess, dominoes, Backgammon and, though it's not a game, we enjoy jigsaw puzzles.

It always surprises me how many games are basically parcheesi.

Our Yahtzee experience went back to when there were cardboard cups, much quieter than the plastic ones. We'd also simply rattle the dice in hands (which did make cheating a bit easier, at times).

"It always surprises me how many games are basically parcheesi."

Including backgammon and "Chinese checkers"...and the board game aspect of Trivial Pursuit...

I keep thinking I should buy a new set of Uno cards. My wife and I used to play that but stopped because I kept getting angry when I lost.

(I suppose I should be more understanding of Boy #2's behavior.)
