I lost interest in late night TV shortly after Carson's retirement. There may be more complex reasons for my changing interests and viewing habits, but I think Carson's absence is the key.
A Proustian trigger. Wow. I remember as a kid sneaking to watch it all through the 70s. Loved the quirky guests and got to know Charro, Joan Rivers, Orson Bean, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote, Tony Randall and so many other colorful characters. Loved it! Hummingbirds . . .

There was a time when even this show wasn't about promoting movies or tv shows.
I have to say it. I miss Carson.
I agree with all of the above in spades. It's hard to remember how good Johnny was now until you see an old clip. He defined this genre of television.
Hey, you kids! Get off my lawn!
