Acquired Tastes
Oh, Paris, was it really only three months ago. Age does things to time. Both lengthens and shortens it, I think.
And speaking of that, I went to a concert Thursday night with Serena Ryder, Ray LeMontagne and David Gray and didn't make it to David Gray. Pretty sad, huh? Ray was fabulous though.
Anyway, James Reasoner was talking about acquired tastes a bit today and I sympathize with his inability to get Tracey Morgan. He leaves me cold too. And then I turned on the radio and the Car Guys were doing their NPR show. That is an taste I've never acquired and I was amazed to see they have CDs of their shows at my library. Maybe if I drove a car I'd get them? Are they funny to you?
What or who haven't you acquired a taste for?

I'm not a fan of the Car Guys, either, Patti. And I drive a car and a van (but not at the same time). I've never acquired a taste for reality shows like THE BACHELOR or THE BACHELORETTE. I do watch TOP CHEF.
Patti - Interesting question! There are several things I've never acquired a taste for. One of them is reality (or, if you prefer, unscripted) TV. I just don't enjoy it.
My wife likes David Gray a lot.
No reality shows, other than the occasional cooking one, just don't attract me either.
He is pretty cool on a CD. Unfortunately I didn't get to try him live.
I never acquired a taste for beer.
Olives, reality TV (why would you want to pimp yourself on TV like that?), and Harry Potter never did anything for me.
I don't really like fantasy at all--when a book starts to describe the fairy or other magical world, I'm out. And I've tried to like it, really. But no.
Will Ferrell.
To be fair, I've never seen a Will Ferrell movie, mainly because every trailer I've ever seen was painful to watch. I can't imagine what a whole movie would do to me.
Me too, Randy. I find him likable but don't get a lot of the humor in his movies.
I do like olives but Harry Potter left me cold and I did read the first one. I am reality based in life but not on tv shows.
I never acquired a taste for squid or octopus...but then I'm not a hardcore Red Wings fan.
That's a good question.
Haven't acquired a taste for:
Chopped liver. Too strong smelling.
I haven't explored much contemporary rap behind the headliners. Too loud-sounding in the wrong way to my ears.
I haven't acquired a taste for what passes for Country & Western nowadays. Too saccharine.
I do have a taste for Buffalo wings.
lettuce
I have every Ray LaMontagne cd thus far. Quite a talent.
Lettuce needs help. On its own, it lacks taste.
Love him. David. And he was fun in person although not very forthcoming. Just sang and introduced his band at the end.
I just cannot bring myself to get excited over the majority of TV cop shows. I'm talking about sacred cows like LAW AND ORDER and CSI and all the rest of them. They all smack of tired formula writing and casting. From start to finish.
You know, there's always the woman who could double as a supermodel, a couple of minorities, a "crusty but benign" supervisor, requisite shouting scenes, a little politics thrown in. Sound familiar?
Even old chestnuts like NYPD Blue left me cold. That show was just the same ol' same ol' with jittery camera work.
Okay, you may put the cuffs on me. I'm ready to board the train for the gulag now.
Yep, most of them wore their welcome out long ago.
I like the Car Guys, but if they come on while my husband is driving, we're going to another station.
Guacamole (and avacados in general) was an acquired taste for me. I used to dislike it, but over the years I've grown to enjoy it and even make my own.
I will NEVER acquire a taste for reality TV because I never watch it.

Almost all veggies were an acquired taste for me. It wasn't until my husband took over cooking that I found out how good they could be.
Also wine was an acquired taste for me because I was so used to sweet drinks. Once I gave up soda and sugary drinks, wine came easily.
English comedy and English cooking, which has been reinforced since I arrived in England after a 24 hour trip on Wednesday. But I have acquired a taste for Carling lager in a pub after a nice trip down a canal in a narrow boat.
We like HOLEMS ON HOMES which is, I guess, a reality show. I've never acquired a taste for "funny" mysteries, America's Funniest shows, Stephanie Meyers' books, Oprah, Larry King, soap operas, rap/hip-hop, screaming kids, sushi.
Finally got sushi and are you in northern England, Kent. I was there a year and never got a love of any sort of beer. Too bitter for me.

I don't care for Tracy Morgan or Will Ferrell, either. Ditto Adam Sandler, Pauly Shore, Shelley Winters, Roseanne Barr, most reality shows (I like court and cop reality shows, though), anchovies, cozies, modern movie- & TV-making techniques swiped from MTV, liver, food that once had tentacles, the phrase "I'm like," Brussels sprouts, A-Rod, tofu, smoking, and Hitlary.
I like Brussel Sprouts if they are grilled with sesame oil and bacon. Otherwise....
I like the Car Guys, but only for about 10 minutes every once in a while. And I do drive. Too much. ;) Like Margot, I've never gotten into reality tv.
"Reality" shows are either game shows, which are tedious when there's no wit nor intellectual engagement about them, or documentaries (usually with fudged editing), too often about morons we are meant to feel superior to.
So...aside from THE IT FACTOR, particularly its first season, which was more or less a straightforward documentary about aspiring actors, I haven't wasted much time with "reality" shows. Nor game shows since childhood, though I can still enjoy a vintage WHAT'S MY LINE or a contemporary JEOPARDY from time to time.
The Magliozzi Bros. are occasionally funny and usually interesting enough to me if there's nothing I prefer to listen to at the moment, but as does Harry Shearer, I wish they didn't add their own laugh track to their show. Their animated television series on PBS tanked, hard...except in Guam, for some reason, where it continues to endlessly repeat. Go figure.
The Will Ferrell fantasy film STRANGER THAN FICTION is hardly perfect (and is elevated by the presence of Emma Thompson, among others), but is a good film and, of course, unlike nearly anything else he's done.
I'm not sure a fantasy writer, with a long-term Superman jones expressed in at least one short story, should be dumping on fantasy so readily...
