MY TOWN MONDAY: THE BURTON THEATER

Don't you admire young people who take a chance on a city like Detroit and open a movie theater. (Now remember, the city of Detroit has perhaps two other movie theaters).

That's what's happened here--and in one of the city most notoriously poor areas--the famous Cass Corridor.

It used to be called The Burton International School. The lockers, the little boy urinals, and a strange cache of wheelchairs, which frankly terrified me.

But there is also a decent- sized theater with a fine screen, a popcorn stand, a ticket taker, safe parking and a darn creative program coming in the weeks ahead.

The theater is just south of the WSU campus. If you're in the area, come on in. You will be happy you supported such brave souls. Here's their website. We saw Cold Souls last night. You can, too.

That is a worthy act, patti. I'd wish we'd see more of this. That's one cool website, too. Thanks for this.

p.s., I've nominated you for Kreativ Blogger, my friend.

Here and there things are popping up. But for the most part, Detroit is in tatters still. Wild animals have begun to habitate-we have coyotes, for instance.

Living in the Detroit area and being a film buff this is good news.Too bad their schedule isn't very promising this month. Hope next months will be better. Gives an alternative to the Landmark Theaters and the Detriot Film Theater(which is very difficult sitting in if you are over 6").

This is similar to what is happening in Western New York. A small private group of film buffs is buying up closing movie theaters and reopening them. Some of their theaters are running first-run movies and others are showing older films at discounted prices ($3). We only have one AMC theater left and a handful of Regals.

I wish them much success, and hope there are no terrifying VP's or Dean of Student's ghosts roaming the corridors.

I noticed it on the Way to The Old Miami last week, maybe I will give it a shot.
