The Andy Grifffith SHow

Do you know Andy never received an Emmy although Don Knott was well rewarded? That is indicative of voters not understanding the real heart of the show. This is my favorite episode.
What is yours?

Oh, I hadn't thought of that show in a lot time, Patti. A lot of good moments in it...

I'm not a fan of awards. TIME is the great decider on what is Good and what isn't. Alfred Hitchcock never won an OSCAR for Best Director. James Joyce never won a NOBEL PRIZE.

But if they are going to give out awards, they need to reward great work even-handedly.

It was a deliberate choice by Andy to make Don Knotts the comedic center of the show while he played the straight man setting him up.

I like "The Pickle Story" (no one wants to tell Aunt Bee how awful her canned pickles taste) and "Convicts at Large" (Barney & Floyd are held hostage by three escaped female criminals) and especially "Mountain Wedding" with Howard Morris as Ernest T. Bass, with Andy & Barney trying to do a PYGMALION to "civilize" him.

Patti, there's a lot of politics behind a lot of awards. Great work and great artists are repeatedly ignored by award committees.

This was on from 1960-1968, and I maybe saw a half dozen episodes. For the first four years I was at home - high school - and my mother, who ruled the TV, didn't like it or liked something opposite it better. After that I was in the Army and then college and didn't watch much TV. I didn't own one until 1972 or so, a 14-inch B&W. I just remember Knots always seemed "stupid funny", a style of humor I don't much care for (like Three Stooges).

In every other episode Mayberry is in a dry county, but this one allows liquor sales. There were a lot of good episodes and one that stands out is Barney stinking up the chorale with his flat singing. I also liked the ones with the Darling clan.
