Forgotten Movies, RACHEL, RACHEL
Margaret Laurence, one of my favorite writers, penned the original novel, A JEST OF GOD. Paul Newman directed his wife as a lonely spinster schoolteacher in rural Canada. A sad story as are all of MLs books.This film boasts the formidable trio of Geraldine Fitzgerald, Estelle Parsons and Woodward, all who emote to beat the band. A bit overwrought but still, how often do we see films about women over 35?

We saw this one when it first came out (1968). I'm thinking it was more of a "woman's picture" than something I'd put on a favorites list.

I remember seeing this one - just barely - long ago. Thanks for the reminder.
It is a moody piece in the style of method acting. That seems to have disappeared.
It describes a type of life and character we rarely see anymore: the spinster schoolteacher in a rather remote area with limited avenues for romance or self-expression. I just saw it a while ago on TCM and, as you point out, it's very sad.

I saw RACHEL, RACHEL long ago. I'm with you and Deb: it's very sad.
I remember coming out of the theater, being very impressed with the acting, especially Woodward. A fine film.
Seems like she went away too soon.
I really want to see this film agaion - it has been decades actually but I still remember parts of it very well.
