Brubeck came to my college while I was there. One of the greatest nights of my life. An incredible concert.

Or, more to the point in this clip (from an Australian tv show!), Joe Morello the drummer. Even given the talent of bassist Gene Wright, Brubeck and Paul Desmond, this sort of hit (and one of the most durable of their recordings, popping up all over--Emma Thompson used it as the theme for her short-run UK sketch series THOMPSON) and of course their Monster hit "Take Five" were both showcases for Morello...whom I had the privilege to meet once, and he was a great gentleman (I've also met and very briefly spoken with Brubeck...Desmond was gone by the time I was just starting to listen to their records on my own steam...I don't know about Wright's health, but I believe he's the only remaining survivor of that best DBQ...though the Brubeck/Gerry Mulligan quartet was no slouch, either.

The album I first fell in love with was the one that this came from, TIME FURTHER OUT: MIRO REFLECTIONS, with a Joan Miro painting on the cover, which Brubeck (and his wife, Iola) take some pains to tie all the compositions to elements of the painting. The second "time signature" exploration album, after TIME OUT, there would eventually be five (counting the quartet's essentially final album, not counting odds and ends compilations and some concert albums CBS would release--and the eventual reunion album--TIME IN. "Unsquare Dance" is in 7/4.

(They take pains in the liner notes, that is. Iola Brubeck wrote for little magazines while in college, where she met Dave, and would help him write his prose and write lyrics to make some of the compositions songs.)

One of the first jazz albums I owned. Like Dana, I was fortunate to see the quartet live in Madison, Wis. when I was a student. Mesmerizing.
