Bury Me Deep (2009)
"In this novel based on the true-life case of the 'Trunk Murderess,' Abbott turns the stuff of sensational confession magazines into a rich meditation on the unclouded depths of the soul."
—Carl Rosen, New York Magazine (included in the list of "What to Read This Summer")
"Working once more (as in The Song is You, 2007) from a true crime, the infamous Brighton Trunk Murders of 1934, Edgar-winner Abbott brings the era to life, inhabiting the 'bright-eyed and twitchy-tailed' party girls in all their enthusiasm and desperation. Her nearly stream-of-consciousness narration is direct and powerful, straight from Marion’s addled and passionate brain. As such, it is full of repeated phrases: 'It was like a saber lain before. It was a saber, a gauntlet, somehow.' But for all the classic-noir simplicity, such as the use of repetition rather than elaboration for emphasis, her prose carries an urgency that brings hard-boiled crime fiction kicking and screaming into the modern age. Abbott takes readers on a wild thrill ride with an utterly believable and strangely sympathetic heroine."
—Starred Kirkus Review
"Abbott is a retro original, and her reimagining of the true story of Winnie Ruth Judd, the Trunk Murderess, is a frothy mix of character, plot, and period detail. As good-girl Marion finds what she is really capable of, her psychological portrait is as carefully imagined as the nightmarish world that lurks beneath the community’s caring façade. . . . [I]f you like time-traveling crime fiction, you’ll want to bury yourself in Bury Me Deep."
—Keir Graff, Booklist
"Edgar-winner Abbott explores gender inequality and its sometimes tragic results in her well-crafted fourth crime novel, inspired by the true story of Winnie Ruth Judd (aka the Trunk Murderess)."
—Publisher's Weekly

You should be very proud of Megan. I ordered BURY ME DEEP. Couldn't Megan take her tour to Buffalo or Toronto?
She was in Rochester at St. John Fisher College a few weeks ago. I should have mentioned it.
She's only coming here because we can get a crowd for her. Notice how the tour bypasses the midwest. We're just flyover zone normally.
The Buffalo Bills hold their summer Training Camp at St. John Fisher College. I've been there many times. I love the cover on BURY ME DEEP!
This is a Hell of a tour. I know a gang of people who will be hitting the Phoenix end. Can't wait.
ARRGGHH! The number one tour I'm most looking forward to this summer...and she hits Houston smack dab in the middle of my family's vacation! Argh! Well, I suspect she'll return to Houston someday... :-(
Keith-Make sure you tell her that her mother loves your writing.
Yeah, summer is a bad time for a tour, esp. the middle of July.
Fly out here on July 9 and you can stay with us.
She does get to TX more than anywhere else because of Busted Flush Press.
Hell of a tour. Nice to see she's popping across the pond. Nice town Harrogate. Nice beer Theakstones.
One of the books has been published in Poland so maybe someday she'll get there too. I wonder what Theakstones was.
Old Peculiar is their most famous beer. being old an peculiar myself i quite like it .... I'll be in the aptly named Blighty for summer but in Cambridge, unfortunately.
I'd like to be in Cambridge for summer!
Love that cover -- is that Gloria Grahame's twin?
Fans of Theakston's Old Peculier should see a charming film from the '80s called, 'Bert Rigby, You're a Fool.' Toward the end of the film, Robert Lindsay does a song and dance about the beer.
Invitation arrived yesterday, Patti. Looking forward to it!
I plan to be at the MI stop.
Eric & Joe. We'll go out for beers after--just down the street.
I remember that movie. I remember the same comments for the cover was THE SONG WAS YOU. I acutally know who the actress who posed for it is. Maybe I'll post her site and see if you think she looks like GG.
Thanks, George. I think it is my favorite.
How come authors I'd leave the house to see never come to Washington? DC, that is.
She should come there because she could take the traind down and stay with my brother or best friends in Chevy Chase. Maybe I will try and talk her into it. I guess DC gets all the political writers at Poetry and Prose.
Ah, nothing in the New Orleans area, but then it seems so few folks down here actually read. Sounds like a good book, though. I've gotta check it out.
Charles-She will be in MS though. Not too far away.
I will definitely have to find my way to Harrogate. Meanwhile, I have ordered a copy from powells.com.
Well done Megan!
Pierre-how are you? I was thinking about you just the other day.
Rumor has it a freelance writer from the north of England is interviewing Megan about her career to date soon.
I'll be looking forward to it, Gordon. She's spent some time in the North of England herself.
Oh sure, this first couple of emails we exchanged she asked me TONS of questions about Manchester!
If only Austin and Houston weren't 8 and and 10 hours away.
Me, too. I would love to get to that bookstore!
