You Score It
The new rage of putting together video book trailers has started to infect my writing. What tune would you use to score the end of this story: a thirteen year old boy returns home after burying the man his mother has murdered and finds her sitting on the porch, the murder weapon in hand.

If making the trailer for the film, the usual lack of creativity would suggest Stealer's Wheel's "Stuck in the Middle with You."
To heighten the creep/ick, Trusty's Starkweather/Fugate-style serial killers on the run song "Honey Mustard."
The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" even if THE PRISONER has already max'd out its irony value, back when it was new.
Actually, Smart Went Crzay's "Null Set" somehow seems apropos.
"It's complicated/Since you don't have the guts to keep it simple..."
Or Virgin/Whore Complex's "Speakerphone," sung from the POV of a murderer trying to confess to police who's appalled to be put on a speakerphone.
Your brain is a wondrous thing, Todd. Agile, comprehensive, quick. You can have five ideas to anyone's one.
How about "Mother's Little Helper" by the Rolling Stones.
There you are! And I was thinking there Must be a relevant-enough Stones song. "You Can't Always Get What You Want," that other Stones trailer/ad chestnut, wouldn't be as good in this case, nor "Wild Horses"...
Patti, if you're serious about book trailers, check out Kevin McLeod's royalty-free music at incompetech.com. He has a list of "Suspenseful" titles as well as one labeled "Dark". There's one called "Smoking Gun".
I've used several of his works for my videos. He only asks for a $5.00 donation per work used. Very reasonable.

Folsom Prison Blues
The first thing that came to my mind when you described the scene was Leonard Cohen...
Some great stuff being done in book trailers. I wonder if it helps sales at all. Any Johnny Cash song is welcome.
You could have the mother softly singing "Buffalo gal won't you come out tonight, come out tonight, come out tonight..." for maximum creepiness.
What exactly is a Buffalo girl? Always wondered that.
How about something from the musical adaptation of I Remember Mama?

And, of course, Mama Mia, which I just saw the trailer for. Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. MY poor husband.
