Movies to Cheer You Up

What movie are you likely to choose to cheer you up? With me, it's the movies of my childhood. In particular, it's Pillow Talk. Is Pillow Talk a guilty pleasure? I'm not really asking about guilty pleasures though. More just a film that will take you our of yourself for two hours.

Zoolander, Death to Smoochy, Rambo III, Commando. Basically dumb comedies and dumb action movies where I don't have to think too much.

Oh, if I get to expand, I'd add Dirty Dancing, Groundhog Day and The Heartbreak Kid.
I don't even want to go into old TV shows I might watch on a rainy Saturday.

My #1 cheer-up movie is Weekend at Bernie's. Her Alibi with Tom Selleck and Paulina Porizkova is runner-up.

Weekend at Bernie's is a delight. A dead man was never played with such panache. I've never seen Alibi. Have to put it on my endless netflix list.

The Marx Bros. and W. C. Fields work for me. But then I'm an Old Guy.

It's A Gift is the funniest movie I've ever seen. The blind man routine in the store (which probably isn't politically correct enough to film today) is incredible. As are the various routines on the porches.
Pillow Talk is pretty damned old too.

Pillow Talk qualifies as a recent movie to me. Judy and I got engaged before attending another movie of that ilk and at about the same time (Send Me No Flowers). It's pretty funny, too, and it has the same stars.

Now that would be my second favorite one, Lover Come Back being third. But SMNF is the strongest Rock Hudson performance, I think. It's really his movie.
I saw these movies in downtown Philly, taking the S bus and subway in and wearing gloves and a hat as a twelve or so year old. Those old movie palaces deserved that kind of dress and we never minded starting in the middle of the movie and watching it several times. Oh, we are old.

Dorky teen movies are my pick me ups. Anything starring Freddie Prinze Jr or Hillary Duff particularly.

Well, I LOVE Where the Boys Are. I saw it two days in a row when it opened, then bought the novel by Glendon Swarthout.

What ever happened to Paula Prentiss? Did anyone ever have a sexier voice? Okay, maybe Lauren Bacall, but few others. I haven't seen her since that TV show He and She with Richard Benjamin.

These don't do it for me because movies have to have an air of believability for me to get absorbed in them and thus cheered up
