Short Story Wednesday: PLAYING GAMES, edited by Lawrence Block"THE PUZZLE MASTER, David Morrell

I have read two stories from this collection. The first by S.A Cosby made use of the game of checkers. It was a fine story, well written, but pretty predictable. "The Puzzle Master" was not really a crime story but was clever. A couple were doing a jigsaw puzzle given to them by a neighbor and found clues in the puzzles left by the puzzle creator. I learned a lot about jigsaw puzzles and was treated to a clever story.  Any more information would ruin it.

For some reason, my library did not get this anthology so I had to buy it myself.

I finished the Helen Ellis collection. For you and some others, you might get a kick out of "Hello! Welcome to Book Club," which gives the "rules" of a very particular - and peculiar - book club. "The Fitter" is told by a woman whose husband is the title character, a man who can look at any woman and accurately tell her the exact size bra she should buy. The narrator, turns out to have issues herself, which I won't ruin by telling you more. "Dead Doormen" is an odd little tale, and the final story in the book is "My Novel is Brought to You By the Good People at Tampax."

I have two of her essay collections to be picked up at the library.

Currently reading THE BEST OF R.A. Lafferty, among others.

Really surprised they didn't buy a collection by a Brooklyn writer. Maybe it will come later. I need to read the first two collections.

The Best of Lafferty is an even more difficult choice among work than for most writers. It's a good stab, on the part of Jonathan Strahan, but any such book that excludes "Fog in My Throat" is weakened thus, at least.

Did your library actively refuse to buy it, Jeff? Patti's right, it's an odd choice, given even how anthologies fare less well than collections or particularly novels, given Block's following.

Morrell is always likely to do something interesting.

I'll probably have something up this afternoon, Patti--thanks as always for the call and gathering!

This sounds like a really interesting collection, Patti. And I haven't read Crosby's short stories. Perhaps I should...

I don't have a relationship with the librarians the way George does, but you can request that they buy something and sometimes they do. I'm just surprised because they have so many other Block anthologies in their catalog.

I recently got a copy of this book, and I will be reading stories from it soon. Starting with yours, and then trying some stories by authors I have not ever read.

And, I'm sorry I didn't enlarge the image/remember you'd sold a story to this one, Patti!
