After saying to Todd that he should consider renting, I felt obliged to post this. While I was in CA, a sprinkler went crazy on the 11th floor and flooded most of the floors beneath it. For the first few days, fans ran all the time, giving someone like me the fear there would be a fire. That did not happen, however the corridor is pretty ripped up. So renting is not the complete solution I hoped for. Luckily, my apartment is just before this photo and there was no damage.
I am not wild about having walls ripped out and exposing who knows what for who knows how long however.

Yikes! Sorry...yes, I've had apartments, usually with roof leaks but also with emerging roaches, attack my books and other possessions more than often enough (the roof leaks once in Virginia, once in my last apt. so far) ...maybe mask up in the hallway and charge the landlord, if possible, for an air purifier or two for your apartment's front door/elsewhere in there...
We have been in an apartment since Nov pending a new home construction. We’re loving it, a small charming college town - Davidson, NC, no outside responsibilities but the dream ends next week when we move in.
There is no ideal living space. Each choice of residence comes with its own set of problems. Diane and I just paid Mucho Dinero to have how vinyl siding replaced. Now, our house is warmer (and in the summer cooler) but the pounding of hammers for a week was No Fun!
I agree with George, there is no living space without problems. We are happy to now own our home, rather than rent, but for us that meant very little square footage and being in a condo. The condo part works fine because we don't want to be responsible for everything, but it has its own problems and it has caused us some angst along the way.
This 15 story building, about ten apartments on each floor has three full-time maintenance men, a cleaner, a doorman from 3-10 and two managers. All of them are very nice. As apartments turn over, they are remodeling them to be open concept and hard wood (fake) floors rather than carpeting. So there is always hammering or drilling going on. I pay more money to live here than I would like but the location is great (for a non-driver) and I feel safe here as an older single woman. There is a nice gym, which I rarely use and a very small lobby. I know no one in this building. All of them go out the back of the building onto the car decks. They are mostly young-don't quite get why they would pay high rent at their age but maybe these are corporate apartments.
