Forgotten TV: WILL AND GRACE

So WILL AND GRACE is returning this fall. I can pretty much guarantee I won't watch it. I disliked the original show because although it pretended it was breaking ground in having two gay men as leads, there was barely a single scene that did not play to male homosexual stereotypes. Yes, we like show tunes, yes we think about sex 24 hours a day, yes, we care about our clothes,  yes, we only date male models. You would have to assume from this show that every male homosexual was interchangeable with every other one.

And even more than my dislike of the two male stars was my dislike of the two female stars. Karen was annoying in every scene: bitchy, shrieking voice, bad values, and on and on. And Grace was a poor me sorority girl.

I could never understand what anyone saw in this annoying foursome. Nor in the actors they brought on to play their parents, their dates, their friends.

And I can't believe the new show will be less annoying than the first version.

That was a good show, Patti, and it's good to be reminded of it.

Not to me.

I never liked it either. Patti hit the nail right on the nail as to it's problems. As far as sitcoms go I'm looking forward to the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Me too. Can't wait.

I never watched it either. Grace was a loser. Jack and even Karen could be amusing but they were not human beings, just caricatures.

Patti, I share your analysis of WILL & GRACE. I watched part of an episode and gave up. Yet, WILL & GRACE managed to attract an audience for years. NBC is so desperate, they're willing to try a re-boot.

hum, I wasn't a regular viewer but I caught an episode here and there and generally had a few laughs. Most of the characters were a bit irritating, except for Will. But for an occasional half hour they didn't bother me too much.

I do feel sorry for the networks. They are handicapped by so many things. But they clearly settled for mediocrity for too many years, which cable has been able to surpass.

I couldn't agree with you more, Patti. Superficial and biased, without humor. I also look forward to the hilarious "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on HBO. Larry David is a wonderful neurotic.

Cable has added more than its share of mediocrity over the years, some of that wildly overpriced. Basically, the entire slates of Bravo and to too great an extent Logo are devoted to this kind of camp stereotyped programming...the characters Grace and Karen exactly as much the stereotype of het women who hang around with gay men as the men themselves were (the mope and the "sassy" "hag"). Not that, say, MODERN FAMILY is in any way an improvement. And there has been no lack of good programming on broadcast, but it rarely does great business...NBC has had the likes of LIFE, KIDNAPPED, SOUTHLAND and JOURNEYMAN all draw poorly over the last decade, while being often brilliant series. While such cable mediocrity as BIG LITTLE LIES and THE WALKING DEAD are praised to the hills.
