Waitresses on Film and TV

As you might expect, there are a ton of waitresses in film and on TV. Always memorable was the one in FIVE EASY PIECES.In HELL AND HIGH WATER, there are two great ones. On Broadway right now, there is a musical based on the Keri Russell film WAITRESS. MILDRED PIERCE, of course, started as a waitress. I remember male waiters on FRIENDS and FRASIER. But the women seem more memorable.

Who is your favorite waitress? On the screen that is.

I know it's cheesy, but I laugh every time I catch an episode of TWO BROKE GIRLS. It's silly, but humorous (to me).

Never watched it, never will.

But few sitcoms appeal to me these days.

So many sitcoms feature waitresses--at least for a time: Roseanne, Friends, Alice, Cheers, Happy Days, It's A Living, True Blood...

Most of the women I know have worked as a waitress at some point so I guess it resonates.

Here are a few I can recall making an impression on me -- Joan Blondell in GREASE, Ann Sheridan in THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT, Helen Hunt in AS GOOD AS IT GETS, and Linda Darnell in FALLEN ANGEL.

If you say waitress role really the first one I think of is Polly Holliday as Flo on ALICE and later her own show FLO. But that's TV, of course.

Helen hunt, yes.

And the recurring Lisa Kudrow character on Hunt's series, MAD ABOUT YOU.

The leads on TWO BROKE GIRLS are better than their material.

I loved all three waitresses on "Alice," played by Linda Lavin, Polly Holliday and Beth Howland.

Couldn't wait until that show was on TV every week.
