THE DINNER-Italian 2014

I loved the novel by Herman Koch of a few  years ago. And yet this movie, though very different, was tremendously satisfying too. Ivano de Matteo’s nuanced drama widens the scope in a way that makes you feel you understand the story better. More than one way to skin a cat, I guess.

Two teenagers, cousins and both seemingly normal, are caught on video kicking an old woman who got in their way. As the story unfolds you see why such a thing took place given their families and how society treats wealthy kids today. Pretty scary stuff.

I read his SUMMER HOUSE WITH SWIMMING POOL which had both a thoroughly repellent narrator and a scene of such parental cluelessness it bordered on abuse. Anyway, perhaps I came to him through the wrong book, but I was disinclined to try anything else by him.

That sounds much like this one. I guess if a film or book reflects life in some interesting or artistic way, I give it a lot of leeway. Maybe too much.

Oh, I thought the novel was, indeed, really scary, Patti. But I've not yet seen the film. I ought to try to.

OUR KIDS would've been the better English title, too.
