Brilliant movie. Had totally forgotten this opening, and a surprise when Gene Hackman emerges from the bystanders in that long, long zoom shot. Thanks.

I agree with Ron: brilliant. I saw this in college, then again a few years ago, when it really hit home with me. One of my favorite Hackman performances. People--myself included--tend to think of him as Popeye Doyle or Little Bill; he's wonderful in this.

One of the very best films of the seventies and maybe the 20th century.

Another great Gene Hackman film is NIGHT MOVES made around the same time as THE CONVERSATION. He plays a similar role in both movies, a sort of alienated and lonely private investigator.

One of my favourite films of all time and not just for its wintery, kafka-esque depiction of San Francisco but also its wonderful minomalist score by David Shire (Coppola's brother-in-law at the time), although for this title sequence it's Walter Murch who 'composed' the sound effects! Just brilliant all round - even Harrison Ford is terrific as the gay flunkey.
