The music by Mascagni of course helps a lot here but it is beautifully done - it's such a hard film to sit through for me for the violent intensity of it and all the negativity - but the opening is beautiful,

A very hard on to sit through. I remember my mother watching it and saying, "I don't understand why anyone would like this." I sort of see her point.
