Movie Theme Music: THE UNFORGIVEN

This is my absolute favorite movie theme song. I may have said that before but this time I am telling the truth.

Since you're speaking of theme music, I must say this: we were watching THE TEN COMMANDMENTS on Saturday night, which had one of Elmer Bernstein's early movie scores, and at one part just before the parting of the Red Sea I recognized that he'd recycled some of the music 22 years later...in NATIONAL LAMPOON's ANIMAL HOUSE.

I swear I am not making this up.

Patti: I assume you are referring to the 1960 western with Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, and Audie Murphy. Not Metallica. While Burt Lancaster was always a hero to me as a kid, I never warmed up to Audrey Hepburn. In anything. She seemed to be the "darling" of all these 50-60 producers who cast her with aging actors as if to satisfy their own fading fantasies. In closure, and this is just a hunch. Did you, like my wife Brenda, and a handful of girls I knew,have a crush on Audie Murphy? Yours truly, Toe.

Sorry, but I could not disagree more. Two for the Road is one of my favorite movies and Charade is right up there too. Hepburn made both of them shine.

From that period, I'd take the theme from PICNIC. Also THE APARTMENT. And I'm OK with Audrey. I wish that Julie Andrews had been able to do MY FAIR LADY on film, just to have a record of her in the role, but Audrey did fine, too.

Ron: I agree about the theme from Picnic. And, just maybe, the fact that these old geezers gave Audrey the part over Julie explains my negative bias. Audrey did not sing her own parts, they were dubbed in by someone who could sing. I was thrilled when Ms. Andrews won for Mary Poppins. Which proves to me that a lot of others in Hollywood believed she should have been cast in the role of My Fair Lady. Also, in my opinion, Dick Van Dyke deserved a best supporting actor award for his portrayal of more than one character in the Disney film. Yours truly, Toe.
