My Life at the Theater, September 22, 2011

Apparently in 1995 I saw Dangerous Corner at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York. The play was written by J. B. Priestley and directed by David Mamet. It starred, among others, Felicity Huffman and Rebecca Pidgeon.

I have no memory of the play. None at all. Does anyone? Here is the sparkling review. Money wasted, I guess.

Well, I certainly like Priestly...and you supported all those folks, even if none of it sticks 16 years later...(which, after all, is a middlin' fair amount to ask of any given experience).

I Thought we might both be misspelling "Priestley"...

It is one of the few playbills I have absolutely no memory of. I do remember THE INSPECTOR CALLS but not this one.

Patti - What's funny is I've had that experience, too. I've never seen this particular play, but I know exactly what you mean.

I read the play years ago, along with his AN INSPECTOR CALLS. We've seen both in London, CORNER in 1981 and INSPECTOR in 1994 (with Barry Foster and Julian Glover, in a production that later came to New York). We also saw his WHEN WE ARE MARRIED in 1986, starring real-life married couple Timothy West and Prunella (Sibyl Fawlty) Scales.

So yes, I remember it.

Oh, and as I may have previously mentioned, we saw a musical adaptation of Priestley's THE GOOD COMPANIONS back in 1973, starring Judi Dench and John Mills, with music and lyrics by Andre Previn and Johnny Mercer.

I've always found Priestly a bit "worthy" and over moralising.

Dublin has had a good run of plays this Summer and if you're interested I wrote a bit about "Hay Fever" at the Gate on my blog some weeks back.

Here's wishing you better luck with your next sortie to the theatre.

Well, this one was from a long time ago. I have had many memorable nights at the theater, including one at the Abbey Theater (Angels in American, ironic, huh?)

That's funny - we were in Dublin in 1981 (a week before the Royal Wedding in England) and saw one show: Hay Fever at the Gate.
