Marital Strife

BREAKING BAD is the biggest source of tension at our house.

I think it's the most brilliant TV show since THE WIRE. Phil thinks it glorifies the drug business by making it so much the subject of interest. It think it exposes it as the soul-sucking business it is. If he didn't run off to check the Tiger score so often, he might see the scenes where Walt is exposed as the slimebag he's become.

I detest Drive-ins, Diners and Dives. Shuffle the deck-every episode is the same. Phil loves it. Loves watching meat cook on a grill. I can respect a good cooking show, but damn, this isn't it.

I know we need another TV, but we both kind of think we can find common ground. Right now, JUSTIFIED and MAD MEN are the only shows we both like. And I ask you, how different is JUSTIFIED from BREAKING BAD.

Is there a TV show you and your spouse or partner disagree about? Or do you go to your separate corners.

Patti - We're lucky, actually. I don't watch a lot of TV and with DVR technology, I don't have to watch the few things that do interest me at a particular time. So my husband and I don't really have a lot TV-based strife...

The last show we always watched together was The Sapronos. We'll also watch Intervention together(if it is a good one, like heroin or meth ;))Other than that, our tastes are way opposite. What usually happens is I tell her about a decent series like Dexter, Mad Men(both jumped the shark last season IMO)she won't watch it until her buddies finally catch on, then she's hooked via On Demand. Opposites attract, in this I truly believe.

We don't watch all that much either but our tastes are different--and have grown more different.

I'd say "Justified" is much lighter in tone than "Breaking Bad", but both shows are excellent. Most BB fans would like "Justified", but not vice versa. The best solution to your problem is a DVR and a cable company with a good On Demand system. This is especially important for Sunday nights because about 75% of the good stuff on television is jammed into the Sunday night 9:00 to 11:00 period.

Funny post. Thank god we got rid of cable a couple of years ago. Melanie loved watching all of those awful Bravo shows (particularly Top Chef) and I watched too much Sportscenter (also awful).

Lately we've been watching Mad Men, True Blood and Curb Your Enthusiasm through Netflix. Though I keep hearing about this Breaking Bad...

My husband and I are very good at striking compromises (perhaps because there are so few shows/films I really bother about), but as our two daughters are still at home most of the time, we appreciate having two TVs (and youngest daughter is going to buy one soon).

When we do watch something as a family, it is usually crime fiction - well, what else ;)

Luckily, my wife and I love BREAKING BAD (along with JUSTIFIED, THE GOOD WIFE and other well-written fare). We part company when there is someone with a 'Dr.' in the show's premise (as in Drew or Phil, or anything else that has 'Rehab' or 'Intervention' in the title). The exception being Hank Lawson from ROYAL PAINS, of course.

We both like THE GOOD WIFE. I forgot that one. We do have a DVR, but we're both there at ten most nights so even that doesn't solve it.
Oh, yes, when we had kids it was more complicated. Movies v. sports all the time.

"The Good Wife" is probably the best network show now that FNL is gone. But this season it will become part of the Sunday night logjam.

Incredible.

My wife and I share a lot of the same interests for film and TV. She draws the line at westerns; I cannot abide THE VIEW if I can even faintly hear it from two rooms away.

Oh yeah. Jackie watched several things I don't watch: DAYS OF OUR LIVES, ROYAL PAINS, HAWTHORNE.

In my case, you guessed it: DINERS, DRIVE-INS & DIVES. I'm totally with Phil on this; you don't recognize a true classic when you see it.

Neither one of us watches BREAKING BAD (we tried) or MAD MEN, for that matter.

We do watch THE GOOD WIFE, FRINGE and HOUSE (though I am always threatening to leave the room), and such cable fare as EUREKA, WAREHOuSE 13, RESCUE ME (Jackie doesn't like it much), BURN NOTICE, THE CLOSER and COVERT AFFAIRS.

She's gotten much more tolerant about Yankee games over the years, but draws the line at football.

Oh, and like George we DVR everything other than the news and baseball.

Oh yeah, two thumbs up on JUSTIFIED.

Patti, let your husband watch the Tigers. The season is going to be over for them quickly enough once the playoffs start.

I like Justified in spite of what I think is mediocre writing. Timothy Olyiphant is just so good in that show.

I have not been able to get into Breaking Bad for the opposite reason--I find the acting very unconvincing.

This summer I've been watching mostly the Red Sox, but also watching Louis CK, Weeds, The Green Room, and that's it.

pattinase (abbott) said...

Are you saying the Yankees will mop up the floor with the Tigers or the Sox will do it. Either one probably. I could watch Olyiphant walk across the room forever. Louis CK is the most original show in a long time although it make me vaguely nervous and he talks about masturbation way too much. Still, it's good, very good.
Yeah, no more commercials now that they weight in at more than 1/3 of most shows.

I think I'd rather watch real meth dealers than Guy Fieri...

Me, I see what I want sooner or later -- the beauty of digital. I'm with you on BB re: The Wire.

I know one couple (they like Mad Men and Justified as well) who break -- for good or bad -- when a ballgame comes on.

pattinase (abbott) said...

His charm sure eludes me Thomas.
I used to love baseball and then it occurred to me the number of hours where nothing happens.

Obviously you've never watched cricket, Patti.

I have. And could make no sense of it.

Annie likes MAD MEN while I can't stand it, and she absolutely refused to watch even a single episode of BUFFY, even when (or perhaps because) I wheedled. We both love THE CLOSER and get great pleasure out of CASTLE in spite of its silliness (I did manage to get her hooked on FIREFLY, and she's retained her fondness for Nathan Filion).

Hmm. Alice, my housemate, loves anything to do with "Lady Gaga," whose music I like well enough, and that's all...I wouldn't even ask her to watch BREAKING BAD with me. What we definitely try to catch together is THE GOOD WIFE and the more disposable ROOKIE BLUE.

I suspect THE GOOD WIFE will thrive on Sundays.

Todd Mason said...

Oh, I got Alice hooked on BUFFY. I won't watch football with her much, nor baseball, but she prefers baseball to exercise to.

There's more agreement than disagreement. Either we watch TV shows together or we don't...BECKER, EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, TWO AND A HALF MEN, MY WIFE AND KIDS, to name a few. We avoid serious stuff. Two TV shows my wife and kids lapped up and I didn't were Andrew Lloyd Webber's ANY DREAM WILL DO and MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA.

Other than Mariners games, my wife and I have no common ground. What I really hate, despise, loathe, and can't stand are those godawful Hallmark movies. Just hearing the rinky-tink music makes my skin crawl. Linda watches them. I'm with Phil on DD&D, but think that the host needs a serious makeover.

pattinase (abbott) said...

I guess this is a common issue.
And I also wonder if we assert ourselves inside a marriage but maintaining different tastes.

Charles Gramlich said...

Several actually. Lana likes those court shows like Judge Judy. I can't stand 'em. She likes "The Soup." I don't get. I like football and she doesn't and I will watch SF stuff she won't. But we both like The office, Frazier, Hell's kitchen, and a few others.

Prashant C. Trikannad said...

Oh yes, how could I forget FRASIER? Thanks Mr Gramlich.

Let's start out with the local evening news. Apparently the only thing that gets ratings is bad news, and they make the most of it. There isn't even a regular sports segment, but always lots of "health news" which of course isn't news at all. They will not report any story that doesn't have video attached. They don't mention local events. I only tolerate the weather segment, because here that's critical information. I read the newspaper, watch the national news on NBC and CBS as they are on at different times here.

As for other shows, I'm another who enjoys DD&D. I get a kick out of Fieri and since I love that kind of food at least I get to see it even if I can't eat it. We do enjoy some PBS shows: NOVA, NATURE, TRAVELS TO THE EDGE, MASTERPIECE.

Non-reality TV? We don't watch a single series, haven't for ages. It's possible the last nighttime drama I watched was LA LAW.

Although we both love to watch baseball, my husband also loves cheesy movies which I can't abide (for example, a Steven Segal marathon on AMC or one of those "Mansquito" type movies on the SyFy channel). If there's no baseball on, I'll try TCM, Food Network, HGTV, NatGeo, History Channel, or A&E, none of which really appeals to hubby. The solution: Two TVs in two separate rooms. Works like a charm.

/WV: fockerpu. I'm sure Todd could make a really good joke about that.

pattinase (abbott) said...

Neither of us want to admit we take TV seriously enough to warrant a second TV, but that is a complete dodge.
Let's see what Todd can do.

I think that any attempt to refine that ore might be meretricious.

But some folks get charged a lot of money to do just what that sounds like. (That's my set, and weren't the headliners great folks? Please remember to tip the waitstaff...and drive safe.)
