MTM-Detroit-GRAN TORINO

Eudora Welty reading.

Clint Eastwood chose to set his new, much buzzed about movie, Gran Torino, in Detroit. The original story was set in Minneapolis, which makes sense because it deals with a racist Korean war vet's interactions with the Vietnamese immigrants in his neighborhood. Minneapolis has more Vietnamese than Detroit but there were other considerations.

Any movie that's filmed in Detroit and has a car in the title is a plus these days. And Detroit needs a plus and a mention of an American car more than Minneapolis. Even if our 1972 Torino rusted through the trunk in three years, I'm gonna see this film.

If you want to see Detroit, the real Detroit, see the movie. Eastwood used Detroiters and Detroit as much as he could. Someday they might make a pretty movie about Detroit, but for now....

Thanks for this recommendation.

Everyone else,

Go to Patti's story links and click on Instrument of Their Desire which debuted yesterday in the new Beat to A Pulp e-zine.

Great story!

Thanks again, Terrie. Have you considered becoming a publicist. I know a lot of people who need one about now.

I love when movies are made this way. I will definitely go and see it as well.

I saw the previews for this and it looked really intersting. I'd heard it was originally supposed to be a Dirty Harry in retirement but I don't know about that.

I read that too and the previews indicate the same sort of guy-but I think this guy worked in a plant instead of a cop. Otherwise, the same guy.

Thanks so much, Debra.
I am very excited about the movie because it's about something important plus set in Detroit.

Out of Sight had some great scenes in Detroit, too. Some of them were even a little pretty. And do you remember the movie Grosse Point?

I saw the trailer for this Clint Eastwood movie and I thought it was based on the interview with Isiah Thomas' grandmother who claimed when the gangs came to 'draft' young Isiah she sat on the porch with a shotgun and threatened to blow them across the expressway.

Maybe a romantic comedy with Clint and Isiah's grandmother would be good?....

I think he actually worked from a novel set in MN, John. I'd go for the romance but Clint was never much for kissin' and huggin'

I had no idea that Detroit is one of the two largest Hmong communities in America. Clint insisted on casting real Hmong actors and that community was also one of the reasons why he wanted to move it to Detroit.

The Detroit area has huge Asian populations. Not so much in Detroit but in the Metro area.
