He Knows Our Names!

It is very nice when your grandson knows your name, when he calls you Nana and Poppop or Grandma and Grandpa. You strut around proudly, knowing your connection with the next generation is solid. You matter in his life.

That's until you walk through a senior citizen's complex with him, taking him to see his great grandparents and realize he calls everyone over fifty Nana and Poppop, points to each of them and says Nana, Popop like he's counting. It's a designation as much as a name. I'm one of the many Nanas.

But hey, I'll come when called. We all will.

I remember years ago when one of my sister's grandsons was small, I called her by name. He looked at me just as serious and said, "Her name is Gram."

My father always has called my mother, Dear. I remember putting that on a form as her name once.

At least you know HIS name, Patti. My problem is remembering names these days.

Of course, it's a good thing he doesn't have a really memorable name:

Actually I don't always know his name. I have a tendency of calling him Stephen, after my nephew, the last baby born into the family. Twenty-six years ago.

I'm with John on the names. I have five grandchildren under the age of six and I am always mixing up names.

However my cutest name story is that once when a granddaughter and grandson were trouncing their mother in a board game, I said,
Hey, go easy on my little girl."

Well, my grandson was fascinated that his mother could be anyone's little girl. So now whenever he talks to me and wants to say something about his mother, he refers to her as "Your little girl" as in "Your little girl took us to the park today." Then he giggles hysterically.

I have referred to my son as "My baby" on occasion but only one of his kids picked it up and then she dropped it once she was no longer amused.

That must be a fascinating concept for small children. That their parents were once small.

I was trying to get him to say Grandpa Chuck. He picked up on the Chuck part right away. I just hope he pronounces it properly.

Yeah, Chuck has its difficulties. But at least you'll stand out in the crowd.
