The spouses of series' detectives. First of all, there aren't that many. Most of the men and nearly all of the women detectives are single. And if there is a spouse, they are usually little more than a domestic diversion. Or get killed off or divorced (Wexford). Or the gymast that was married to one of the Dutch detectives.
Can you think of any examples of spouses that are interesting, developed characters? Nora Charles, of course, to start the ball rolling.

I always liked Dave Robicheaux's wife Bootsie. Burke killed her off between books (she had lupus). I haven't quite warmed up to Dave's new wife yet.
Mmmm. Myrna Loy. Now that's a happy thought to start the day.
How about, what was it, Mrs. Columbo? Or was that McMillan and Wife? Why is my brain stuck on '70's television? The image of a squinty eyed Peter Falk is edging out Mrs. Charles.
Mrs. Columbo only appeared in her own series after Columbo went off the air. But you're right about Mrs. McMillan (And I miss that actress). She could be a bit ditzy but she got out there and did more than make lunch. Although I think they had a servant to serve that function. Shamefully I've never read Burke.
