Short Story Wednesday 2 Wednesday's Child, Yiyun Li

Incorporating her own story about the death of her two sons, this story is about a mother who loses her only child when the fifteen year old lies down on a train track. Traveling in the Netherlands, she recalls her mother's cruelty to her after that death and how her failure to form a relationship with her mother may have contributed to her daughter's death.

Li has a new book out about her double death. It was reviewed last week in the NYT Book Review.  This collection was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

I've read a couple of her stories, and had the collection on hold. But then, I had enough "dark" for the moment, so went with something else. I'm enjoying Paul Doiron's collection SKIN AND BONES, stories of game wardens in the deep woods of Down East Maine.

OK, I am really losing it. Turns out I did read this collection, when we first got to Florida in January of 2024.

I'm also reading Bill Pronzini's western collection, THE HANGING MAN & Other Western Stories. Read "Markers" this morning. Good short story.

I want to get a copy of that book, it is on my wish list and the book sale list. And of course, I could read some of her short stories at The New Yorker online, which I haven't done yet.

Today I started reading stories from a short story book while waiting for Glen at his appointment with the retina specialist. The book was Mysterious Pleasures: A Celebration of the Crime Writers' Association 50th Anniversary, published in 2003.

There has been several errors on when things published this week. Hope next week goes better.
