I've passed 850 stories read, so a new record for me this year. In fact, I've probably read more short stories than anything else this year. Currently reading the Hilma Wolitzer collection, TODAY A WOMAN WENT MAD IN THE SUPERMARKET, which is something of a disappointment to me. It's fine, but maybe I was expecting something different. Most of the stories have the same characters - the woman narrator, her husband and young children - and were written in the 1960s and 1970s. I finished the collection of ghost stories. I stopped reading the Ed Hoch book while I catch up on library books first. I read the first story in the Andrea Camilleri Montalbano collection, DEATH AT SEA.
I finished the Maigret collection, set aside DEATH AT SEA to read the Patricia Highsmith collection Jeff had recommended. I read 7 of the 13 stories when A Bad Thing was done to a small defenseless kitten. I was told the stories were dark, but… Bah. Back to DEATH AT SEA today, which is terrific. Montalbano is such a great character.
I will never read as many short stories in a year as Jeff does, but I think I will start tracking my short story reading so I know how many I read and try to increase that number.

I agree with you, Jeff. And I wonder if she eventually pulled them altogether into a novel.

Still writing mine...in part for the Fictionmags Index (another issue of the long-folded SPECIAL REPORT: FICTION).
Got a "floater" in my right eye...that can distract!
Still slowly adding to what might be Friday entry rather than a SSW!
