Things That Are Making Me Happy

Really happy this cold snap, record-breaking for the number of days when it didn't exceed 20 degrees) is coming to an end. I am not the kind of person that likes to hunker down. Phil even less so.

We got to spend a day with Kevin this week because of the cold. So funny to watch he and and a friend plays games through Facetime online. They each has a computer and a phone to make this happen. They were 15 miles apart but it didn't matter. What a world.

PRAIRIE FIRES about Laura Ingalls Wilder is so interesting. Aside from the stuff you can find in the Little House books, it is interesting to see how both she and her daughter, Rose, forged careers somewhat based on Fake News. Highly recommend it although it is a pretty sad story for most of the book.

I, TONYA was better than I expected chiefly due to a knockout performance by Margot Robbie. I found the mix of humor and serious wife battering a little disconcerting though.

Phil enjoyed LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, about the death of Lincoln's son.

Great to see a huge turnout at the Detroit Institute of Arts to see BOMBHSELL, the story of Hedy Lamarr .

What about you?

Oh, I'm glad you liked Prairie Fires. I've heard good things about it, and was wondering about whether to read it.

Like you, I'm happy the Polar Vortex is about to withdraw to the North. We may hit 50 degrees by the end of the week!

The Bills broke their 17-year Playoff drought, but ending up losing in Jacksonville 10-3. Next year looks promising!

I'm looking forward to seeing THE POST this week.

LINCOLN IN THE BARDO was a good read. Florida is warming up for you. I happy you had a good week.

Friday was "Adoption Day" in Christina's family, marking three years that Jack was officially part of the family. In reality, he has been part of the family since he was six weeks old, when Christina and Walt began fostering him. This year, to celebrate they went mini-golfing and big brother Mark let Jack think he won both rounds. (Mark is ever sweet, ever kind, and ever patient with his little brother.) Afterwards, it was off to Red Robin where there were FRIES! Adoption Day is a permanent holiday and Jack looks forward to it each year.

My Christmas gift from Jessamyn and the girls finally came in -- a three-foot stuffed llama. (I am to llamas as Bill Crider is to gators.) His (I'm sure he's a boy although I haven't checked) name is Fergus.

Finally watched the last two seasons of BOSCH and am looking forward to season 4.

I watched the first episode of an Indian television series and immediately forgot the name of the title character. INSPECTOR (something). It was so bad it was moderately enjoyable. Inspector Something is the star of the Criminal Division and he always gets his man. It starts with his boos asking where he is because he had promised to arrest the murder by 8:00. "It's only 20 minutes before eight," she is told. We then go to a rooftop where Inspector Something is playing cards with three men. Yadda, yadda, yadda. The murderer is one of the three and Inspector Something arrests him before the 20 minutes are up. Then comes case where people are throwing themselves in from of a train at the same station and at the same time of day. All indications are suicide, but Inspector Something calls it murder by hypnosis, something that only a trained psychiatrist can do. (Huh?) The reveal is that Inspector Something is also a trained psychiatrist. The most interesting part was a bar scene where a crawl at the bottom of the screen states that drinking is bad for you and that the scene is used only for dramatic effect. Fun, but no way am I going on to episode two.

Really enjoyed John Connolly's second collection NIGHT MUSIC: NOCTURES, VOLUME 2, especially the stories about the magical Caxton Library.

Have a great week, Patti!

As I'm sure Deb will say, "That's Hedley!"

One word: Florida.

By luck more than any other reason, we picked what turned out to be the perfect day to leave, Wednesday. The storm hit Wednesday down south and Thursday in the Northeast, do we were OK. The only issue was around Richmond, but the roads were fine and mostly the weather was dry and fairly sunny, if cold. We've never run into snow that far south before - basically all the way through South Carolina - and I was wearing a winter jacket through Georgia.

The trip. As indicated, it went well. I'm always uptight before we leave but this time it was only leaving Virginia that had me concerned. A bunch of couples we met in Fredericksburg were staying an extra night, but I'm glad we didn't as it got colder.

We'll start catching up on movies with THREE BILLBOARDS tomorrow.

We have our usual suite here and our favorite restaurants to visit, and have downloaded ebooks to the Kindles.

It's all good for the next 10 weeks.

Can't wait to see you. Pick a date to meet up before January 24 when my brother arrives.

Thanks, Jerry. I am waiting for Bosch too. It's been too long.

I'm happy you're happy, glad Jeff's trip south went well, impressed by Jerry's family activities, glad for George that his team finally made the playoffs, and glad the sun is out.

But what about you, Rick? How are you? What are you up to?

Glad for the warm up. Saw Molly Bloom last week and liked it. Going to see I. Tonya tomorrow.
Looking forward to The Post and Hostiles which haven't opened here yet. Glad to see Three Billboards do well at the Golden Globes. Usually movies I like don't win the big awards and movies I feel sort of meh about win such as Moonlight last year.

Glad you like it.Saving it, THE POST, THE PHANTOM THREAD and HOSTILES for Florida. I expected THE POST to run off with all the awards so it was a suprise.

warmer weather is helping me too. I hate wearing coats. I do sleep well in cold weather though
